ASU Summer 2010 Program Applicants

Hello, everyone!

I submitted my application for the accelerated Summer 2010 program at ASU awhile ago, but I just realized that the February 1st deadline was coming up and wanted to see if anyone else here on allnurses.com applied or is applying. I'm so nervous, I've already applied once and didn't make it--I really, really, really, REALLY hope I can get in this time. :uhoh3:

I'm already starting to get impatient waiting for April!!! My whole life is on hold until then! I hate that I can't apply to any other schools because I'm stuck waiting for ASU and I don't want to pay a bunch of application fees if I make it into ASU regardless. :( Don't get me wrong, though, I really want to get into ASU's program. I just want to get into nursing, really. It's just a little annoying that we will find out about getting into the program so late in the year :banghead:.

Hi everyone! I just found out about this site from tttt (we were in the same learning community) and have spent probably the past hour and a half reading from the very beginning lol. I just wanted to say CONGRATS, it's going to be hell, but you are going to love it at the same time. Just keep in mind that you're presently making memories that you'll look back on and smile about. So enjoy every moment =).

I only have 3 tips: Don't fret about the readings. If you find that it helps and you have the time, by all means, do it. You'll absolutely gain extra info that way. If you don't have the time or hate reading (like I do), you'll be fine. I made good grades w/o reading a dang thing. I'm definitely not bragging, I'm actually envious, I wish I liked reading but I just can't seem to stay awake for certain materials. My other tip is, the final project when you're caring for your own LTC resident, DON'T PROCRASTINATE. I remember seeing tttt walk into class the day it was due and I couldn't help but crack up, YOU WERE A MESS, LOL. I, too, stayed up the whole night before and got done only 45 minutes before I had to leave the house. Never again. The third thing is, learn to accept that B's are good and to expect C's. A's aren't necessary. We're in the program now, no need to be in the competitive mindset of making perfect grades. I'm still working on trying to accept this fact myself.

We have a couple projects due at the end of the semester, but I don't remember one being about the LTC. Or will we probably hear more about it when we actually start LTC? But welcome, regardless! :)

Ok, So I am looking at ASU's Nursing pre-reqs and it's a long laundry list of about 16 classes? ... is that correct, because usually the pre-reqs for nursing programs consist of only ANP I&II, Chemistry, Nutrition, Psych, Sociology, and microbiology.

ASU doesn't require Sociology, but yes the length is kind of long. It's long basically because you'll be earning a Bachelor's degree, so you have to prove competency in subjects like English and Math. Courses like CDE 232 (Human Development) is a very valuable class to understanding development as well as the 4 HCR's (including Pathophysiology). The three HCR's other than Patho are kind of mind-numbing because they can be classes that are so straight forward that it's boring and seemingly pointless, but they do enlighten you about the nursing process and a lot of areas that are interesting to learn about when pursuing any job in the health care fields. Other than that, though, most of the classes are pretty straight forward.

Are you an AZ native? What other schools are you looking at? I know I looked at other schools out-of-state and they *seemed* easier, like the had less pre-reqs, but on their Nursing sites, 99% of the time they didn't include the general competencies needed in order to attain the Bachelor's degree.

In other news, I hope those of you who met your Well Elders had fun!! Taping was nerve-wracking at first, but it was pretty fun to sit back and laugh at the tapes afterwards! :yeah: It's neat to have the opportunity to literally watch how you interact with your "patient."

Now to study for the abbreviations quiz in Pharmacology and skim the 12 chapters we were supposed to have read by tomorrow! :up:

the ltc project for clinicals is on the patient you are specifically assigned to in LTC. it covers stuff like patient history, medical diagnoses, etiologies of diseases, medications, evaluation of medications, assessments, nursing diagnoses, concept map and analysis.

it should be under clinical experiences guides for 320.

Haha sounds like yall had fun with the taping. Were they picky about how you did? Because I was under the impression that it is a competency, not at I really know what that means lol. Should be interesting.

The Well Elder experience was cool. Got to sit and chat with them for a little while and just got to know them. Also got a little tour too so I'm excited to meet with them again and get to work on doing some real nursing stuff.

Yay for quiz tomorrow! It should be pretty easy I think. And you so should have read the chapters. They are SO easy to read and, I thought, quite interesting. I've just got a 1/2 a chapter left! I'm so proud of myself! :)

If anyone wants, I've put together all the "key points" at the end of each chapter in a single word doc, which do a pretty good job of summarizing all the important information. If you'd like me to, I can email that out so just send me your email in PM and I'll send it.

Not picky at all,we practiced all morning then went through them in front of our LC and FOR, mrs "keep steppin" sat in a couple. Overall a very supportive way to learn the communication techniques. It was very helpful to watch ourselves to see how we could improve. It seemed like everyone was WAY harder on themselves than anyone else.:no:

I'm going to PM you for those key notes, but may not be able to, not sure if I have given enough posts here since I am fairly new. Thank you for offering those to us, very generous. :yeah:

Hey all, I just sent this this through blackboard, thought I would post here as well just in case.......

Hello every one-

I wanted to let those of you that use a mac, that the required workbook/cd packet (Martinez de Castillo, S. L., & Werner-McCullough M. (2007). Calculating drug dosages: An interactive approach to learning nursing math (2nd ed.). Philadelphia; Davis) is not mac compatible. I contacted F.A. Davis company and they are going to get back to me on possible alternatives. It is a cd, so you can bring it to any PC (XP or later operating system) and still use it. Just thought I would give you all a heads up because I think tomorrow is the last day you can return any books.

Thanks for replying. No, not an AZ native, I'm from NY. All the other schools I've been looking at are in Fl. The schools are: Florida State University (top choice), University of Florida, and the University of Central Fl. I should have my associates and pre-reqs for these schools by spring 2011.

Hey guys just thought I'd pop in and say hi! I love remembering my semester when I read about what you guys are doing. Like when we did our taping, you're right it was fun to just sit back and laugh haha. I had that scenario with the 13yr old boy who smelled and was in to see his school nurse, I had no idea what to say so at the end i just added "dont forget to shower every day!" LOL! Anyway, I hope you guys are enjoying you're semester so far! :yeah:

That was a hard one to do. I'm so glad I didn't get that one. I probably wouldn't know what to say to a teenager who smelled in a health care "clinical" setting lol.
