Adult nurses wanting to work in the USA..

Hello all

I have been reading many of the posts on here about adult nurses who want to go work in the usa, but who are having difficulty because they lack hours in certain areas of nursing.

There is a place called Langara College in vancouver canada, it has an excellant course specifically for those nurses who need to make up the hours, this may be a bit long winded way around but it can get you what you need... it lets you take mini courses in paeds , obstetrics and mental health, each course has theory and clinical components, you can take the theory part of each course at home via distance learning and then once you have done all your theory you will sit an exam in your home country, upon passing they will let you proceed to go ahead with the clinical part of the course in which you will have to go spend approx 3 weeks in the designated clinical areas, to achieve the clinical hours you need, the clinical aspect is done in vancouver! after this course you will have the required hours you need to be able to register as a nurse in vancouver.... this is the way i am planning on doing it, as I have family in vancouver so i do not mind working there for a short while, the advantage is then i will have the required hours for applying to do the NCLEX .... Anyway I just thought I would share this info with those who wishto know where to make up hours from...because I can tell you now its going to be very hard trying to find a place in the UK! .. if anyone wants more information, please contact me via a pm, or here.

Hope this helps!

Hi everyone

Is there anyone out there who qualified in 1987.The CGFNS has accepted my papaer work but the California board won't as i can not produce a breakdown of hours. This is because i have been told that paper work in the uk only needs to be kept for 3 years. So I'm now stuck, can anyone help?

I had a similar problem when I move from NY to CA. CA is extremely strict, when it comes to documentation. I was however able to get my CA licence after working and passing the NY state boards. You might want to try another state first that has a reciprocity agreement with CA.

Good Luck

PS: I'm originally from the UK

That won't work. California doesn't have reciprocity with any other state. Only the NCLEX exam has reciprocity in all states. Educational requirements are up to each state to accept. And they can set their own policies.

I have been a US-trained nurse and licensed in the US for too many years to count, I still had to submit a copy of my transcripts from my nursing program that has been closed for years, before I could get a permanent license. CA will not issue a permanent license on the basis that you have a license in another state. They are extremely strict on that matter.

For internationally-trained nurses, it is up to how the school lists your hours.

Sounds like the powers that be in the UK have purposely changed the way nurses are trained so that they intentionally fall short of the US requirements, thereby stemming the nursing exodus out of the UK. Very clever. I am pretty sure that OGP are intesively looking for a way of overcoming that obstacle as there's no way they are going to let anything get in the way of their cash cow. You can be pretty sure they'll be setting up completion courses in the future to ensure that all their precious commodities (nurses) can access the required hours. After all, if they don't, they won't have a business.

I have also been saying this for a couple of years. That nurse training has changed to stop migration of the nurses. The thing is no matter where you work you will come across someone suffering from one of the other problems ie general med/surg with mental health problems and I think it is important that you have some base line theories on each condition to have a understanding

I have just been told that OGP charge the hospital $51 per hour for hiring me, that is some cash cow that I am, especially as I dont even get half of that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Plus if I do overtime they get more than half of that as well.:rotfl:

i suppose they do all the legal work to get you there though, im not a fan of OGP at the moment, however i wouldnt have liked to have done it all on my own with no knowledge of the process, plus they dont help us out of the kindness of their hearts- they are a buisiness, i thought they would be charging more than $51 especially if you consider the cost of agency nurses in the uk, compared to that we come quite cheap! i suspect they get sign on bonus for evey nurse they find, personally i dont care i just want my visa!

to start a new thread just click on button at top of page saying new thread and give it a title

You can't escape CGFNS CES is required by most states, you have to be general trained and if you have just done Paeds it will not be enough you will be short in other areas. Things will not move fast. It will take on average several months to get CES and visitor visa is usually 90 days and you will not get OK to sit NCLEX without CES. http://pr.mo.gov/boards/nursing/NursingFactsataGlance.pdf

For immigration purpose you will also need visa screen and that will not be issued until you pass NCLEX and that will take 4 months to get, the good news is to apply for visa screen at the same time as CES.

I would suggest posting on the international forum as Suzanne will give great advice on what to do. I would also suggest reading the sticky's at the top of the international forum as they give good steps on the process

:nurse: I have just joined this forum and have been reading the posts about working in USA.

I qualified in 1976!! and have been working in elderly care and as a health visitor since then.

My partner's children have their own companies in new york and houston and he wants us to go and live here.

I would like to work in elderly care or health promotion. I spoke to the Texas Nursing Board yesterday and they are going to send me the forms and info I need to get a license in Texas. I am not sure how I go about applying for a green card once I get the license in Texas. Does anyone have any idea please?

Someone has told me that I'm too old!! I would be grateful for any ideas.

I would actually like to become a private health visitor, baby massage instructor, aromatherapist etc as I also have those qualifications.

Thanks for reading this, Tabz
