Adult nurses wanting to work in the USA..

Hello all

I have been reading many of the posts on here about adult nurses who want to go work in the usa, but who are having difficulty because they lack hours in certain areas of nursing.

There is a place called Langara College in vancouver canada, it has an excellant course specifically for those nurses who need to make up the hours, this may be a bit long winded way around but it can get you what you need... it lets you take mini courses in paeds , obstetrics and mental health, each course has theory and clinical components, you can take the theory part of each course at home via distance learning and then once you have done all your theory you will sit an exam in your home country, upon passing they will let you proceed to go ahead with the clinical part of the course in which you will have to go spend approx 3 weeks in the designated clinical areas, to achieve the clinical hours you need, the clinical aspect is done in vancouver! after this course you will have the required hours you need to be able to register as a nurse in vancouver.... this is the way i am planning on doing it, as I have family in vancouver so i do not mind working there for a short while, the advantage is then i will have the required hours for applying to do the NCLEX .... Anyway I just thought I would share this info with those who wishto know where to make up hours from...because I can tell you now its going to be very hard trying to find a place in the UK! .. if anyone wants more information, please contact me via a pm, or here.

Hope this helps!

:nurse: I have just joined this forum and have been reading the posts about working in USA.

I qualified in 1976!! and have been working in elderly care and as a health visitor since then.

My partner's children have their own companies in new york and houston and he wants us to go and live here.

I would like to work in elderly care or health promotion. I spoke to the Texas Nursing Board yesterday and they are going to send me the forms and info I need to get a license in Texas. I am not sure how I go about applying for a green card once I get the license in Texas. Does anyone have any idea please?

Someone has told me that I'm too old!! I would be grateful for any ideas.

I would actually like to become a private health visitor, baby massage instructor, aromatherapist etc as I also have those qualifications.

Thanks for reading this, Tabz

Plenty of sticky's at the top of the international forum tell you how to go about it, mainly once you pass NCLEX you need to find a hospital to petition you for a green card and then a lot of waiting in the UK for an embassy interview and filling in paperwork

Good luck

Can I confirm if this applies to Adult Nursing Diploma students as well as Adult Nursing Degree Students? I am currently a 2nd yr Adult Diploma Student, hoping to graduate with the degree, I just have to pass all of my exams first time! My concern is if I graduate with the diploma, is that enough to start the immigration process, or do I really need the degree?

You do not need the degree for the US but you must have hours in mental health, Paeds and midwifery both theory and practical. Each BON has their own requirements so would suggest whilst at uni to try and make sure you do get or find out your hours. Nothing else can be done until you qualify and then depending on where you want to live depends on BON to whether you have to go through CGFNS or they do their own evaluation.

Good luck on your training
