Zosyn

Published

Hey everyone. Brand new RN here. Quick question. Does anyone have any advice for reconstituting zosyn into 100 mL of NS? I ran into the problem twice of the zosyn clumping at the bottom and I had to beat the side of the jar with my hand for about 5 minutes to finally get it to mix. Is there an easier way or is this just one of the many struggles we often deal with? Thank you in advance!

Loosen the powder from the vial. Break the seal and add saline to the vial and lightly mix. Allow to sit in pt. med drawer/IV med bin/your pocket for approx. 15 minutes while you do assessments, take vitals, chart, or gather other meds. Shake to mix while walking to room, charting with other hand, talking to pt. or talking with co-worker. I find that after it is done sitting most of the medication is already dissolved and there are only a couple small clumps left, and multi-tasking while mixing makes it feel like it goes faster.

maybe one of those handheld massager things with a couple rubber bands to attach it to the vial.

I try to mix it a good 10-15 min before it's due. I just squeeze the NS into the vial and let it sit, do something else, and by then most of it is dissolved

Haha I saw the title and already knew what the question was before I clicked on it (just guessed). Yeah I fill up the bottle completely and leave it to sit for 10-15 minutes after giving it a couple shakes.
