zofran question

Published

I was thinking maybe onc nurses/someone else might know. I work in IICU and recently had a patient with a zofran gtt, on his MAR. Anyone else seen this? I am a relatively new nurse but was a pharm tech for six years, and have never seen this. This patient never even needed his push zofran for me..... I'm confused. CAT

I don't know about zofran drips, but they also have zofran pumps -mainly used in patients with severe hyperemesis gravidarum that does not respond to traditional treatment. I believe it is similar to how an insulin pump works.

When my dad had chemo they gave IVPB Zofran 32mg, over 15-30 minutes

that's exactly what I was going to say. I did chemo for 6 months when I first graduated.

I have seen a Zofran drip a couple of times on the floors but I had a continuous Zofran pump with my last pregnancy (I had severe hyperemesis).

We give Zofran all the time in PACU with LR and we've never had a problems, but you better believe I'm going to check out that compatibility now!

Jeez, let me know what you find out...I also have given Zofran MANY times through an LR line!!

Up here IV Zofran is a pretty routine order post-op. Usually q6h. Just give it over 15 to 30 minutes. I've only ever heard of one patient having an allergic reaction to it. We usually have the choice of Zofran or Maxeran for post-op nausea.

I've only given Zofran IV but it can be given IM or PO (the tablets). I've never seen a Zofran gtt, however, if I ever need a PCA, I will request one!! Narcotics make me sooooo very ill, I vomit if I even think of a narcotic:no:

I had hyperemesis, just wanted to add i had a zofran pump and it didnt do much for me, i still got hospitalized and kept throwing up but i kept using it all 9 months for fear i would die without it! My daughter turned out healthy which was my biggest fear because there doesnt seem to be much study done in this area.

I've given PO, IVP, and as an infusion over 15 minutes. Never seen an order for a gtt before.

This is off the topic, but I was given Zofran post-op and thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. One moment I was nauseous, the next I wasn't.

i've never seen a zofran drip but i had a pt recently that was on a phenergan drip.

Onc patients frequently have a Zofran drip through chemo. I've also seen our palliative care service use Zofran drips in end of life patients with intractable nausea and vomiting.
