Your thoughts on Max Savings for Nclex-RN exams in Hong Kong

Do you also know of a more specific map(s) which should be used when I'd go to HK to take the nclex exam?
I got an eligibility letter from CA, I think I'd have it processed for ATT next, hehehe...I see, really? So do mean I can't do it online? But Suzanne advised me to do it by mail(when accuracy is at stake and I'd have to let another person do it for me, because I don't have credit card)...A friend of mine/classmate of mine in a review class who also got his eligility from CA, and now has ATT told me that I can apply online(he had a relative do it for him), scheduling would come after ATT and that is what you meant I suppose, right?
I see, so that would be from monday to saturday right?
When I get scheduled, will the schedule be final? I'm asking these questions so that I can carefully plan my travel and time allowance there.

Wow, another 500 hk dollars? Indeed, I'm on a tight budget myself, hehe, how about if you pay the hotel fees in advance? Is deposit still required?

yes. you'll still need HK$500 or a valid credit card.

I went there on a fully-paid for package. nothing to pay for anymore. so I was surprised when the receptionist asked for my credit card, or HK$500.

so don't forget this, or you can't check into your hotel.

Chinese food is okey with me(supposing it is similar to Chinese restaurants here in the Philippines)...I see, is fair wood near the exam site? where is it located? Hehe, I hope their Nai Cha/Milk tea is not as bitter as chowking's...hehehe...

there are lots of Fair Wood restaurants there...I think they're connected to the Fair Wood Malls or something.

I was too distracted by my exam to ask.

I knew about this place only because my HK package included meals at this restaurant, and the food is good.

I haven't tried the Chowking version, so can't say.

I see, really?! How hot? How does it compare to Philippine heat nowadays? Even at the last quarter(I'm planning to get my nclex somewhere around this time)? So jackets are least likely to be used? Do they not have winter there? Is it also raining there often?

From what I see, the cebu pacific package looks promising but when you count more savings, why did they not tie up with the newly constructed hotel(lan kwai fong hotel ) that you mentioned earlier?

When I compared the hotel rate, considering the distance(and that cebu pacific just has one way shuttle service to the exam site), I'm contemplating that I just arrange for a plane fare with cebu pacific(not with the package but I might change my mind later)then have the hotel at lan kwai fong...5-10mins walk is just like staying in Crowne Garden Hotel(though there is a nearer one than that but the nearer one got so full/booked last nov 2005 when I took and failed my cgfns exam, so I just stayed in that hotel) in cebu when you take the cgfns exam in cebu...I believe that is the better choice...Or maybe I should suggest to cebu pacific right that they tie up with that hotel in HK? Hehehe...

well.

I wouldn't sweat this. just make sure you have US dollars with you.

you can change currency at the HK airport, so no worries.

you can also do so in Hong Kong--I think there are money changers every 2 or 3 blocks, and their rates are slightly better than the one at the HK airport.

it's safe to use these money changers, as they're strictly regulated by the HK government.

no, I stayed at Imperial Hotel, it's at the southernmost tip of Kowloon. the exam site is on Hong Kong island. no worries though, it's only a quick, convenient MTR trip away.

get the Octopus Card (or borrow one), and load it up at the MTR stations. loading is in denominations of HK$50 & HK$100. just put in the card in the slot, the LCD will show the balance, and insert the bills...presto! trips around HK$7 to HK$9 for short distances. sorry, I don't have the exact figures on this.

and yes, these MTRs work even with Typhoon Signal Number 3 hoisted all over Hong Kong. so don't worry yourself to death if a Typhoon goes with you to Hong Kong when you're scheduled for your NCLEX-RN exam.

yes, Cebu Pacific is supposed to be much cheaper.

I would advise people to land in HK Airport. in the last typhoon, I think some people who went via Macau could not cross the ocean coz the ferries were closed down. so I repeat: take a plane to HK Airport, especially if it's Typhoon Season. no sense being stuck in Macau when you're scheduled to take the exam. so near, yet so far.

as I mentioned, the public transportation still works even at Signal Number 3. so if you're in Hong Kong or Kowloon, you can get to the exam site.

that's what I thought too.

however, the HK MTR is very convenient. as in very convenient. so I suggest getting there 1 day early to familiarize yourselves with how to read the map (free at the airport, the Visitor's Kit), and maybe go to the exam site to check out the place. I was planning to take a few pictures for this site, but it was raining very hard when I was at the exam site, so no cigar.

I mentioned the milk tea because HK is known for this. I think the closest is at David's Tea House, but of course nothing beats getting it from the source, and it's relatively cheap to try. the allure is in the mix of bitter sweet with the creaminess of the milk and the sweetness of the sugar.

maybe it's an acquired taste. I don't like the Chowking black gulaman, too sweet for my taste.

surprisingly, some food & clothing are the same price, or cheaper, in HK.

if you go there during their Clearance Sales, you wouldn't believe the prices. their sales are really sales. like pricing HK$99 for EVERY ITEM in the shop. meaning jeans, poloshirts, belts, everything. quite unlike sales here, where you get a measly 10% off.

it is very strategic though, good base to explore HK.

it's very easy to go to Ocean park, just take the MTR, then a short bus ride. everything's clean & convenient. (I think the bus ride is around HK$21.60 for round trip.)

being a guy, I don't think it's fashionable to be walking around under an umbrella in bright sunshine and no rain. hence the headache and dehydration and general bad mood after walking around in the hot sun for hours.

before you land in HK, the stewardess will give you blank Disembarkation/Embarkation Cards. you fill these up in the plane.

HK Immigration will get the Disembarkation Card when you arrive. you're supposed to keep the Embarkation Card in your passport, and give it to the Airline counter personnel when you leave HK.

so when you take the NCLEX-RN, you'll have this Embarkation Card in your passport.

remember to remove this Embarkation Card from the passport and place it temporarily in your locker. you're only allowed the locker key & your passport inside the Exam Room. no other pieces of paper.

they're disposable canary yellow foam earplugs. get them from the person who'll orient you and fingerprint you before you enter the exam room. the earplugs are sealed in plastic bags, so open the bag and throw the plastic into the waste can beside the Exam Door. bring just the earplugs inside.

the person will guide you to your chair and orient you. put on the earplugs after she leaves.

yes, tightly regulated. you wouldn't expect to get fake bills; if you have any problems, you can file a complaint and they will investigate.

oh, i have to say that hk paper money comes in different forms. they look very different, depending on the issuing bank.

yep, i was flabbergasted when i saw 2 different kinds of hk$100 bills.

i think they have 4 issuing banks, so expect 4 different kinds of bills for each denomination. (i'm not sure about the number of issuing banks--i asked a hk shopkeeper about this.)

the mtr reloading stations for octopus cards accept the different forms of bills with no problems.

supposedly they are available at the airport, and at mtr stations. i didn't get one, so this info is anecdotal: they are hk$150 each, and includes hk$100 load. you can surrender the card at the end & they will reimburse you the hk$50; i'm not sure if they refund the balance. i don't know where you can do this though.

it's easy, once you get the hang of it, and learn the symbols for the mtr stations.

you will be interested in 2 maps: the hong kong map (which is a large piece of glossy paper, folded) & the mtr map (which shows the mtr stops all over hk, and is in the hk visitor's kit). both are free at the airport, and in some hotels.

you will be interested in 2 maps: the hong kong map (which is a large piece of glossy paper, folded) & the mtr map (which shows the mtr stops all over hk, and is in the hk visitor's kit). both are free at the airport, and in some hotels.

hehe, it's the first time that i have heard of a country issuing different types of bills for a certain denomination(e.g. 4 types of 100hk dollar bills)

i see, since i have no friend who has octopus card, or has been to hk, i guess i'll be forced to get one...hmmm, how about paying per use of the mtr? is this option also available?

if so, maybe this is more expensive right than just buying the octopus card right?

does this octopus card have an expiration?
