It seems as though many people who enter nursing want to enter the ER or the Labor and Delivery unit because of the "cute babies." So I ask this question: what would you like to specialize in once you are a nurse?
I am in interested in the NICU and pediatrics. I also wouldn't mind labor and delivery.
I always hated cardiac, however I did 3 semesters on a cardiac tele unit and found my calling. The fact of the matter is there is not really a job market right now so here I sit working in LTC. It is terrible. The whole corp. is more interested in getting the medicare payments than the actual patients themselves, but it's a job and experience as a new nurse so I am just taking it all in.
I like geriatrics. I just love 'old folks'.
I think the OR...or, better yet -- the ICU or ER would be nice for me.
Something fast-paced. I tend to thrive in areas where I'm muti-tasking and 'putting out fires'.
I'm still trying to figure out the type of nurse I'd like to eventually be, though. I'd like an advanced degree, but in what?
I know that I don't wish to teach or be an NP.
These areas seem more in line with my long-term career goals:
It's fun to read all the replies! I have yet to start nursing school; hopefully I'll begin this Fall- 2010!
Community Health interests me... maybe working at a Public Health Department clinic. The nurses seem to have so much autonomy.
The more I read through this site, ICU sounds more and more interesting. I think it would be a cool mix of technology, intense patient care, and psychiatric nursing, as you help patients and family members through a difficult time.
I am going to work in oncology. I even have my plan all laid out...I want to get a job on one of the oncology floors at the hospital I currently work at as a lab tech, work there for a year or so, get chemo certified, and work in an outpatient cancer center.
I admire anyone who is able to work in pediatrics. I couldn't do it, I think it would be heartbreaking.
Peds! In any way, shape or form. I love kids. I love their honesty, their zest for life, their spirit. I have had a personal connection to a child that lost a battle with cancer and that has just added to the desire. Some people have said they love kids too much to work with them. I love them too much NOT to work with them. :)
Being a currently employed Paramedic, there is nothing I want more than to find the oldest nursing home in my area and apply for a job when I'm done with school.......
In all reality I'll probably try to work my way to the ER, ICU or CVCCU.
One thing I'm noticing is that many people want to start in critical care areas, and no one has mentioned med-surg. I don't know about everywhere, but where I live, most hospitals will not start you out in a critical care or acute care until a set amount of time on a med-surg floor. Even after working as a paramedic with instructor credentials, I most likely will have to fight hard to get to work in the ER or ICU right out the gate after school (and yet I still doubt it will happen with my hopeful future employer)
Keep the hope alive everyone! Study hard and play hard and live big.
Years ago, I wanted to be a midwife. After reading a few books and articles on what it is really like and their struggle to practice in some states in the country, I will just admire their persistence and strength, but I'll choose something else.
I have not started clinicals yet so anything is possible, but ICU or OR seems very intriguing to me.
Psychiatric/Rehab Or general Med. Surg. As an EMT Am not a big Fan of the major Trauma's. Don't like the touch and go of unstable patients. I know we can't save them all but... Also wouldn't mind something technical like OR or CCU. Ideally though I like interaction with people so something where I can talk to folks and teach is what i want.

I personally would like to work in the NICU or Burn Unit, I have had personal experience with my children in each unit. I think being able to look someone in the eye and honestly say I understand what you are going through would be very good. I think I might like flight nursing just because of my time with the EMS
