Just got into the OR Academy...what next
Hello everyone, I've been a member here for awhile but been very busy getting my RN. I have been an LPN for 3 years and finally two weeks ago got my RN. This week I was offered a position in the OR Academy (training program for RN). From what I've read on these threads I got the pretty standard deal, 6m training including classroom and hands on with a 2 year contract. I am the only "new grad" accepting into the program. I am very nervous about starting and just want to be prepared. Any wise words of advice y'all can give would be great. I know we need a text book and a lab coat, what else do I need? I have all the basics...stethoscope, cuff, pen light...all that but this is going to be totally different than anything I've ever done.

Replaced by Certified Medication Aide!
Don't feel bad, we got replaced just after Christmas in my SNF. Thankfully, I started PRN back in August to go back to get my RN. From the things I have personally seen this was a huge mistake on the company's part. I mostly work weekend 3rd now and come in after 2 aides and 1 LPN. The things I hear and find are shocking to me. The LPN i work behind is wonderful, she really tries to stay on top of things, but working 3 halls supervising the aides and dealing with families is tough. We are already in 2 months starting to see serious health issues arise that were 100% preventable d/t the lack of proper monitoring and care. Sadly, my residents are the ones suffering. I have also noticed a huge increase in sleeping/pain/anxiety medications on these units. It's scares me to think of my poor little ladies and gentlemen being drugged so the aide can force pills on them and not really do any care...JMO

New grad, passed NCLEX...what steps do I need to take to become a burn nurse?
Any advice for someone in NC? I have a son who was burned at 18 months old (chemical) and my father (heat) plus I have done wound care in LTC. I am currently a LPN with 3 years exp. and working in the LPN to RN trans. class now, graduate dec '13. I think with my personal experiences I'm being lead to burns...

Nurse not assisting with a Code
No, she's an LPN and we could have gotten orders from the MD to stop the code, but she was not trying to do that either

Nurse not assisting with a Code
I talked to the DON and ADON that morning and they informed me that CNAs are not allowed to do CPR in our facility that is why there are two nurses on staff at all times, and the age old "something will be done about this" comment was made. Don't get me wrong I like my supervisors but they are so busy with "management" type stuff that they don't handle the day to day issues on the floor, also we were not able to get the resident back and EMS/MD called the code

Need input from NIGHT SHIFT nurses
I totally agree about the meetings part, once in a blue moon we will have a 6am meeting but anything else (giveaways, parties ect) are scheduled at 2pm for 1st and 2nd shift to get not us. We have "call weekends" on call for 48 straight hours and if we are getting off work at 6am on friday mornings and the having to work 16h on saturday and sunday (6am to 10p) the back to our regular nights it's crazy.

Nurse not assisting with a Code
Hey Y'all, would love to get some input on this. I'm still new to nursing (licensed LPN for 2 years) so I'm not sure if I'm over reacting or not...I work in LTC 3rd shift with 50+ residents to care for with 2 CNAs to assist. On the other side of the building we have the same grouping, at 5am yesterday my RCS discovered a resident cold and unresponsive, I went in to check for a pulse and found nothing, checked the chart and found the resident was a full code, I immediatly grabbed the crash cart called a code blue and went down the hall. One RCS followed me into the room the other was sent to get the nurse from the opposite side. I began chest compressions and my RCS starting bagging until the other nurse would have arrived. Ideally what was supposed to happen was the other nurse takes over breathing and we swap out just like your taught in CPR class while one CNA calls 911 and tells them we have a code in progress and CPR has been started and the other CNA goes the the front doors to guide EMS upon arrival. What acutally happened was my CNA (who is not CPR trained, our facility doesn't require it) bagged for me until EMS arrived 45 mins later and I did compressions the entire time ALONE! The other nurse was sitting at my desk waiting for EMS and never even told them we started CPR she only stated we had a possible death. She didn't call the facility MD or DON. She just freakin' sat there. When EMS arrived they we're shocked even telling me "why is that nurse sitting at the desk" and "why didn't she tell us you were doing CPR"... Is this not neglect or something similar? I would never dream of not assisting even if 10 nurses were in the room I'd still offer. Any similar situations out there? Any advice on how to deal with her, I can't even speak to her I'm so angry. Other nurses in our building keep coming to me and apologizing for her behavior which leads me to believe that something is seriously wrong with this. Also she has been a nurse for 10+ years so I know it's not lack of knowledge on her part. Thanks for letting me vent Heather

You Know You're A Nurse If...
You're 4 year old knows all the bones in the body (while I was in A & P) and when he started kindergarten he was telling his class about skin assessments and care planning and medication administration, to the point that I got a phone call from his teacher about words she didn't understand

Your desired specialty
I personally would like to work in the NICU or Burn Unit, I have had personal experience with my children in each unit. I think being able to look someone in the eye and honestly say I understand what you are going through would be very good. I think I might like flight nursing just because of my time with the EMS

are there any single mothers that have completed a lpn program?
I am 10 weeks away from finishing my PN program. I didn't start out as a single mom but ended up that way. Trust me save yourself alot of trouble and get used to it now. We've been through the ringer this year, ended up in a domestic violence shelter, homeless with 2 kids no job and full time school. I have survived and so have my boys 8 and 3. Thankful we had a lot of help from our social worker and through the different programs on campus. It is going to be very hard especially with a child that young but you can do it!! DO NOT let anyone steer you away from your dreams. It was very hard on my boys because they knew mommy was busy and mommy had homework and many times begged me to stop and play but I had to keep on going. Now here I am tomorrow we have our school graduation ceremony and they get to see a little bit of what this means to them. Ok, so my 3 yo won't care but hopefully my 8yo will get it. I know in July when I get pinned they will both be there with me and maybe 20 years from now say thanks. Go for it! You can do this! BTW get a good babysitter and then get two more as backups. Trust me on this one, I almost failed first semester due to clinical days. Nobody wants to get up and babysit at 5am.
