The conversation with coworkers each night starts with "I got x amount of sleep today..."

When you black out during your ride home from work!! I don't work nights anymore, but when I did I'd pull into my driveway and think, "How the heck did I get here??" LOL!

...u wake up at 11 am thinking that you are late for work.

...when u hop out of bed on your night off and start getting dressed for work!

When you start your shift and say Good Morning to everyone and it's 1900!:D

Yikes, I used to do that too!

Meeting are always scheduled during your prime sleep hours, but you still expected to attend.

Friends are relatives are always surprised to hear they woke you calling at noon, even though you have been working overnights for years.

After 0000 you ask what day is it now????:trout:

Yikes! I'm just starting nights this week and am already silently cursing my loud neighbor who yells on her cellphone all day outside, and right now I am prepping to move our bed to the spare bedroom in the back of the house. Cramped sleeping quarters, here we come!

Specializes in LTC, med-surg, peds.

you get excited about working on daylight savings nights when time goes forward an hour because you get off an hour early but dread working the nights when time goes back because you have to work an extra hour (but you get paid for an extra hour too!).

Oh, gosh, for me it used to be the BIRDS!! Those things would sing the morning away and I just couldn't sleep!! A noise machine really helped. Once I got used to it I was hooked!! I STILL use it every night, and I've been off nights for 6 years!! Give it a try! :)

When the thought of getting up at 5AM to go to work sounds disgusting, yet you're routinely up at that time anyhow - and working.

I've had problems recognizing many of the residents as I walk thru the dining room on my way out the door. (Who ARE all these people?):)

I work noon to midnight, so my list is a tad different -

* You dodge drunk divers on the way home as if you are playing a video game

* You tell your central time relatives that the best time to call you is 2:30 AM their time :trout:

* Absolutely all business conducted on days off must be scheduled after noon

* You are very familiar with all Late Late Night talk shows

Oh, yes!!;) Except I seldom got to work during the 'spring forward', but it seemed like I always was scheduled during the 'fall back'. I usually appreciated the extra hour to get things done.:lol2:
