You can't go upside down when you menstruate?

Published

Totally random question... I was doing this yoga video, and in the beginning it said that menstruating women shouldn't do inverted poses. I can't figure it out. It's not like I have a hole on the top of my uterus that's going to make me menstruate all over my liver or something. Is there any rationale for this? I don't do women's health, after all...

Wow! Can't say as I've ever heard that before!

I have no idea, just . . . . menstruate on your liver! :rotfl:

Maybe it has to do with the whole energy part of yoga

:p Supposedly this will increase your risk of endometriosis

Not really a big risk for me, i don't even feel like walking upright during that time, let alone being upside down.

What, people do this on purpose??

As far as not walking into temples and stuff like that, I wonder if that might be because women used to not wear any underwear. I have 3 daughters and I'd hate to have them walking around bleeding all over my carpet and furniture. Still, wouldn't just wearing a rag work a whole lot better than sending them out to to storage shed to bleed on our lawn equipment? :uhoh3: :chuckle

Hehehe I am literally splitting a gut here....:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

My older yoga books caution against inverted postures during menstruation, I think simply because it is such a traditional activity that old wives tales can easily get caught up in it. I think, too since Ayervedic medicine has worked for this culture so well for so many years some people figure why mess with it now? There must be an energy system/prana/chi issue also but I can't figure that out, either. I was surprised to se in the article Siri posted the caution against Pranayama which is "simply" a breathing technique to reoganize energy flow...why not? I'm curious! Oddly, I did a lot of inverted postures as a teen because they were said to reduce cramps, even though they could only be done on days that I didn't have cramps, LOL. I did do shoulder stands when my cramps got bad...took the risks...and they did help. Oh well

i started doing some serious yoga about one month ago. it's called bikram yoga and at my yoga place the room is heated even when it's already pretty darn hot outside. anyways, i don't know much about how someone shouldn't do those inverted poses if they are menstruating, but i'm telling you my cramps aren't nearly as painful anymore, and they have been pretty bad in the past. yoga rocks. it's improved my quality of life immensely. well that's all i have to say about my period and yoga. peace. :)

I gotta say, I am by no means an expert on this subject. The article I posted just struck me as too funny.

I have been cracking up watching all of these posts.

Yeah, really! I'm still annoyed that my GYN put on new hormanal medicine that has actaully regulated my period to 28 days...is that really necessary? LOL. He's pleased that it's working so well... I was really quite fine when I went 3 years without a period- it didn't bother me nearly so much as it bothered him! The fewer total days from my life, the better!

I remember when I was a little girl being told by a neighbor to not go into a garden (vegetable or flower) if I was menstruating or the veggies and flowers would die. Has anyone ever heard of that before?

I remember not being allowed to help with the fruit and veggie canning during that time of the month because it would spoil the cans of fruits and veggies.

I don't know if that was a blessing or a curse.....
