I heard something interesting on the news. Yogert neutralizes MRSA. Nurses & doc's are washing their hands with it. Anyone heard of that? One solution to an age old problem.

Hi,
Just off the cuff I would imagine that it is only the yogur with the active acidophillus cultures...Keifer also has that probiotic as well as sour cream does too.
Washing your hands though? Hmm... I would recommend not using the foo foo sugary ones though, they may not only NOT contain the necessary probiotic but, they are loaded with juicy sugar which would only feed the other bacteria.
Never heard about this.

Fantastic. Now I can go home with not only the stench of MRSA in the back of my throat, but also old dairy products. Can't wait.... :chuckle

That reminds me of a funny story. A girlfriend of mine was pregnant and she was having one yeast infection after another..I told her that yogurt could help. So she calls me the next day and told it it wasn't helping...I told her it would take a while to build up in her system...to which she was a little taken aback....Then she asked me, "your supposed to rub it in like a cream, right?" I wish I would have asked her what flavor it was!

Actually - some women do find that yogurt - LIVE CULTURE UNFLAVORED - can be applied topically and provides rather immediate relief for a lady partsl yeast infection. Sounds weird, but those who have tried it swear by it. The biological basis for this as a treatment makes sense, but studies have not really borne this out - anecdotally I can tell you it works.
Personally I'd be more prone to recommending the insertion of an acidophilus or other probiotic combination capsule or two - same effect without the dairy product or the ewwww factor, the studies don't support that either. I'm thinking the studies were funded by companies who manufacture certain anti-fungal medications.

For prevention yes - once you HAVE one eating the yogurt won't be enough...
wrong end
:rotfl:
Wouldn't the suger (lactose), in the yogurt cause more of a problem? Suger the number one food for Candida. There isn't a sugar fee yogurt, only no suger added.
What a yeast infection usually is is an overgrowth of yeast due to a lack of lactobacilli for some reason - antibiotics, altered lady partsl pH due to menopause or other factors - these things kill off the lactobacillus which usually keep yeast in check. Without the lactobacillus the yeast grows and takes over. While its true that sugar would feed yeast, the lactobacillus are still going to take over again.
That said - how does one apply such a thing without making a mess? Pretty much the same way you apply any other lady partsl cream. Dipping a tampax in it is one way, a small syryinge might be another. It doesn't take just a whole lot. The relief is fairly immediate if it's going to work - within hours. This definately would not be the recommended treatment for someone who has recurrent overwhelming yeast infections, but for someone with an occasional issue such as antibiotic use it's worth trying.
Nice discussion of the pros, cons, & possible benefits of plain yogert re: MRSA & other uses.
Important to keep an open mind to new and old theories. I knew a doc who felt that the practice of medicine was as much an art as a science, I agree.

I use plain yogurt (no fruit, or flavoring to avoid the sugar)...but I use it for thrush in the back of my throat. I have asthma ...I usually don't get thrush from my advair, I rinse and then brush my teeth after taking it...but sometimes I end up with it anyway... I start eating plain yogurt and keep itin my mouth a bit in the spots that hurt before swallwing it.
Peace,

I used yogurt for my kids when they were babies and had thrush. A couple teaspoons a day took care of it in short order. Other "remedies" the doctors offered were more a mess than anything and did absolutely no good.
I start my kids on their choice yogurt or buttermilk(yes buttermilk has the same active cultures as yogurt) when they take certain antibiotics too, keeps diarreha from making life totally miserable for them. Good thing they love both buttermilk and yogurt.
I dont necissarily agree that eating yogurt or drinking buttermilk with live cultures does no good for a lady partsl yeast either, i think it helps tremendously and is a lot more comfortable to eat it than use it someplace else.
