I think some doctors have big ego's. what they dont realize is that they need everyone in the hospital from the RN's to the CNA's to the cleaning workers. Everyone needs each other. Everyone works together to get the job done. If it weren't for one person, the other couldnt do their job or it would make it longer to do in some cases.

When I do become a nurse and if that situation happened to me, I'd make sure I'd talk to the doctor and tell them to lower their voice and basically make them feel ridiculous and remind them this is a professional setting AND I'd talk to them later on as well. Everyone makes mistakes. They need nurses and a doctors job is no way superior then the next and I'd make sure they would understand that. I would never cry. no reason to. if anything they should be the ones feeling bad about their behavior.

I do understand that some people are afraid to speak up but I'm the person that I just have to speak up and I have walk away with my dignity and let them know I cant be disrespected. We dont have to like each other but we need to respect each other. this goes for any situation in life. respect. thats all its about.

what i cannot forget was when a doctor got mad at me for the reason that i did not check the oxygen equipment of one of the patients. honestly, i did check it, but what can i do? the oxygen equipment in the hospital where i work is malfunctional. and i cannot just sit there and check it always if the oxygen is not working anymore. i have to attain 60 patients and and i am the only nurse in that ward.

if only doctors can understand the work of the nurse. and maybe that doctor will understand the situation and think first before yelling at me. but i must admit also, that partly i am wrong. it was my duty as a nurse to take care of the patients. but what can i do. the hospital where i work has a shortage for nurses.......... :-(

I didn't get yelled at last week, but I was talked down to.

I was told by a seasoned nurse that it is never ok to be belittled. If something gets out of hand with a doc she told me to say, "I do not disrepect you and you will not disrepect me."

Many docs will respect you more if you stand up to them and not just be subservient to them.

We have a doc that everyone dreads seeing come in every morning. He is such a whiner. When he starts ranting about something, it is usually something that someone else has done. I just take it that he is ranting to me, not at me and leave it at that. I also just try to "kill him with kindness", making sure that everything is in order when he comes in to make his rounds. Yeah, I guess I'm a whimp or whatever, but it doesn't take that long to make sure he has what he needs, where he needs it, and it makes my life easier because he doesn't have anything to gripe at me about. Other than that I just ignore his little tantrums and go on with what I'm doing, that way he gets done what he has to get done and leaves.

Doctors have no right to yell at you!! I have never been yelled at (thank God) because I would give it right back or report them to my nurse manager. I am very lucky to work with a great bunch of Docs. Do not take verbal abuse from ANYONE!! Our job is hard enough without an unnecessary stress like that!! Stand up for yourself, and I bet they will think twice before attacking you again!! Be respectful and calm, but be clear that you won't put up with that!!!

Wow, you all certainly have a lot to say on th situation! It is NOT okay for a doctor to yell at anyone. For some reason, when some doctors get the "MD" behind their name, they revert to 5 year olds who throw temper tantrums.

I am in my practicum in L&D and I have been very fortunate to see a great relationship between the doctors and nurses. The doctors even take time to allow me the learning experience of working with them. They tell me to never let a doctor belittle me, and they will "test" me...and, when they do, I'm expected to stand up for myself and do it professionally. That has been a good experience, since I'm not a very assertive person.

Good luck next time, and reheorifice things in your head to think of ways to say what is appropriate (just as you'd say to a 5 year old: "Dr. ___, I understand that you're upset, but I don't appreciate you yelling at me. If you can calm down, we can find out what is the problem and fix it.") And, if that doesn't work, then file a report with your nurse manager. You'd do the same if it was sexual harrassment, right? This is just as bad.
