14 year old boy wants to become a nurse(my story)

Nurses Men

Published

Every since I could say my first words I wanted to be in the healthcare. I stumbled over a few jobs such as Pharmacist, Occupational Therapist,Speech Pathologist. Then this one day in school I wanted to become a nurse. First, I got a few weird glances then smirks and laughs. But I didn't care about that it is a female dominated job. All I wanted to do is help people and be apart of their lives. I want to be that guy that puts smiles on patients faces. I am currently in highschool trying to pick what speciality I am trying to be in. I find it funny if a female wants to join a male dominated profession she gets praised. But if a male wants to join a female dominated he gets ridiculed and teased. I have experienced a lot of future nurses that are men. But anyway, nursing has been my passion and I think I will never want to stop working.

Hi there!

Not a male or a nurse (yet), but saw your post. I have to say that it's wonderful you are excited about this profession.

My only advice is to keep your grades up. It's a competitive field , in general. So strive for academic success. Use your summers to make your application more rounded. Maybe find hospital volunteer positions or take a CNA course (you'll have to find out the age requirements for your state -- some high schools offer it as an option).

Good luck! Maybe you'll help pave the way for other, potential, male nurses!

Thanks. I recently viewed my report card and I had all 90's and above:). In the summer I am getting a job that's in the hospital in my city.

Welcome to the wonderful world of nursing! I've known male nurses who were awesome--In my class, there were several male nursing students, and one of them got the award for the best grades!! Don't let anyone's negative comments stop you!

Also don't try to choose your specialty yet, wait for clinicals to define your passion!!

Go for it! There are plenty of male nurses. Take college courses CLEP in high school especially science & math as any healthcare career will need these basic classes. It's possible you could get college credit in high school and save yourself some time and money.

Awww you definitely go for it & don't give up!

Excellent! My hubby is a nurse and he loves it. He was a medic before that and thought there was no higher calling than to take care of others.

It is extremely rare at your age to have a dream job. Never forget how you feel right now, this encouragement you are getting and the excitement you have for reaching a goal is not something everyone gets, especially at your age, and most will never feel that way. The road will be tough, people who are lost and want you to be lost with them will criticize you and judge and try to convince you why you couldn't or shouldn't pursue this career BUT forget them!! Become the maker of your dreams and shoot for the stars! And enjoy the journey :) good luck

Way to go. I just graduated with a BSN last week. There were 7 guys in my graduating class of 61. I'm one of two guys on my unit, until last year, they had never had a male employee. There are more and more of us in the field. It's a great career. Nursing school is hard, but you sound like you are extremely dedicated, so I'm sure you'll be able to do it. I hope to see your graduation pic on here some day.

That is awesome:x3:

Thanks so much for your kind words. I'm only a freshmen but knowing your career goals is very serious. Even though its so few of nurses who are men but they still pull through it and PAVED the way for murses now.I am always thankful of the men who wanted to be nurses back in the day. 2.7% to 9.6% and COUNTING. So when I graduate college, men should at least have 20% in nursing

I chose to be a nurse when I was eleven. My BIL had terminal CA and was at Hopkins where I saw males in nursing, not gay, and doing a great job. I loved medicine and didn't want to be a doctor or paramedic. All through HS I got teased, my sexuality questioned and told by guidance counselors to be a PA. I knew I couldn't work for doctors, even then. Fast forward 30 years and there is not one day I regret my decision. Few people in this world find what they are gifted with, when you find it, it is refreshing. So few men are going to college now that you probably are in the minority that your major is for a lower paying career (although newsflash! M.D.s don't make that much more), men are even staying away from med school. Follow your passion and forget about others, it is hard to believe, but HS will be a distant memory and those people will be long gone. May your calling be the one you hear, not what others tell you.

I think its great. Keep your goal as what your sights are fixed on. Time will fly by and you will be at your goal.... Nursing is a good profession and pays well as far as "blue collar" jobs go. There is also great mobility in it, a lot of jobs available around the country for experienced nurses once you get to that point. I only wish I would have gone to nursing sooner than I did. I wasn't an RN until 30, I was born a man though :)
