Yale GEPN 2020

Published

Hi All,

I have been on the lookout for the 2020 thread but figured that I'll have to create one. I am sorry if there is one that I am not aware of.

I am a 2020 hopeful that is looking to make a career switch. I was at one of the information sessions where I gained further insights on the application process and the program. I took the GRE yesterday and was around the 50th percentile for both Q&V.

One of the changes to this years' requirements is that you don't need the GRE if you already have a masters degree or would complete one before the start of the 2020 session. I haven't taken the major prerequisites, but I will take and complete them in the summer of 2020.

I will start talking to my recommenders from next week, I have a tentative list that I composed with a view of having them tell different stories about my candidacy.

May I crave the indulgence of both current and past GEPNs and the benevolence of prospective class of 2020 to make this thread the best one yet. Your views and insights are welcome and appreciated!

Thanks so much for this information! It's very helpful. I attend UW-Madison so I live in the Midwest area. These suggestions for PS are very clear and I think I have to say more about what I know about NP because I am still a senior in college and do not have any work experiences in hospitals. But anyways, it's so nice of you to share these things and I look forward to discussing more about this program here in future.

No problem! I thought the same and even though I have experience in healthcare I think I need to elaborate. I only focused a few sentences on that at first. Happy to help!

In my essay, I am using Nurse Midwife (CNM), and then using CNM throughout the rest of the document in order to cut down on words. I also did this with Yale School of Nursing (YSN). Has anyone else found this to be an issue or do you think it's acceptable?

Hi Steve, welcome to the boards. There is graduate student housing available if you are interested. It is a first come, first serve lottery. There is a date in June where Yale Student Housing puts all their open rooms on the website and you pick which one you would like to rent. I went through the process my first year and the rooms were all gone in 10 minutes, if you wait to look around they get snapped up really quickly. I ultimately didn’t go with graduate housing and just found a place to rent around old campus like most of the other nursing students.

Housing and related costs are included in the cost of attendance which is used to calculate our financial aid package.

Typically weekly schedule for GEPNs is classes Monday, Thursday, and Friday. With ILCE on either Monday or Friday. Anatomy and anatomy lab is Thursday afternoon your first semester with a weekly med-surg review afterwards around 4pm. You will have clinical or labs on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday either one 12 or two 6 hour shifts on two different days.

They changed the decision time frame from when I applied and it is a lot quicker now. I think last year they started to hear back in Oct but since the application deadline for this year is Nov 1st, it will probably be later for your cohort so expect it to be around end of Nov/Dec with interviews happen early next year in Jan/Feb. I believe all interview are now video conferences so you don’t have to fly in for the interview but I would urge everyone who is interested in attending to visit the nursing school and the campus and see if the “feel” is the right fit for you. There are a number of info session days as well that you can opt to attend on campus. A number of students have requested to visit the campus and sit in on classes for a day which is always an option for everyone as well. You can make the request through the Office of Student Affairs. There are also Scholar’s Day and Admitted Students day where you can come and visit the campus.

Hope that helps. Good luck to everyone as the application deadline approaches.

Thank you for responding. So even off campus housing is calculated in your financial aid package? Aside from being offered admission its my only concern. Yale has been a life long dream for me. It looks like the first year will be the toughest schedule wise. But its Yale, its supposed to be tough.

I don't have the answer personally but I know I made some acronyms to save on words, especially since it is 600 versus 750 for the essay portion. I was taught you should spell it out at least once. However, to save on words I did not do that for the program where we collaborate with other professional students. I'm hoping since faculty are looking at, they will know what I mean. Plus I gave context so they would know.

Yes, Yale is a private university so they do not differentiate between in state or out of state tuition. Housing is included in your total cost of attendance which dictates the amount of total financial aid you can receive. It will fall under living expenses. Most students live off campus, not that many students live in graduate student housing since housing is relatively easy to find in New Haven compared to some of the other big cities that students are from like NY, SF, or Boston.

Yes, first year is tough because it is an accelerated program. I remind all applicants to know yourself well and understand your learning style. If quick absorption of information and regurgitation is not how you learn best and excel this is probably not the best program for that applicant. It is neither good or bad nor a reflection upon that individual’s intelligence or ability. Some people just do not learn well in this type of environment because that is not their learning style. That is okay and there might be another program that fits that individual’s learning style better. Keep this in mind as you decide which program works best for you.

Hi everyone, any advice on what to do regarding delayed report of GRE scores? I took the GRE October 14th, and contacted their office today to ensure that the scores would reach Yale by the Nov. 1st deadline. They told me they're conducting an additional review and may not release the scores for another 2 weeks. I told them I have a deadline and asked if they could send me a letter so that I could send it to Yale's admissions. Planning on emailing them today. Anyone know if this will make my app invalid in some way? Having a teeny meltdown. Naturally.

Yale has extended the deadline for supporting documents to November 15th. You still need to submit your application by November 1st but they will give us until November 15th to receive the GRE, references, and transcripts. By the way, I’m in the same boat with having taken the GRE on October 14th. I think It’ll work out.

Best of luck!

Just submitted officially! Now the stressful waiting game begins ? Best of luck everyone!

I know probably a little premature, but anyone know when interview decisions would come about?

Well I was told by Ms. Buck that they are looking to start interviews mid November/first week of December. Looking at the other forums for the program, it looks like decisions go out by January.

The wait is the worse part. Submitted mine last week and i am already anxious, so I know how you feel.
