Hi All,
I have been on the lookout for the 2020 thread but figured that I'll have to create one. I am sorry if there is one that I am not aware of.
I am a 2020 hopeful that is looking to make a career switch. I was at one of the information sessions where I gained further insights on the application process and the program. I took the GRE yesterday and was around the 50th percentile for both Q&V.
One of the changes to this years' requirements is that you don't need the GRE if you already have a masters degree or would complete one before the start of the 2020 session. I haven't taken the major prerequisites, but I will take and complete them in the summer of 2020.
I will start talking to my recommenders from next week, I have a tentative list that I composed with a view of having them tell different stories about my candidacy.
May I crave the indulgence of both current and past GEPNs and the benevolence of prospective class of 2020 to make this thread the best one yet. Your views and insights are welcome and appreciated!

I was considering doing it overall for my GPA but I'm unsure of what to say. It's not like I have a situation where I did lower freshman year and then excelled every other year. Not to undermine what I did, I participated in the honors program all 4 years and graduated on time despite personal and academic issues. I'm just unsure of how to word that. As you said I've also been preparing myself to do a graduate progran However, I thought it was saying do not talk about that in the additional info section? Anyone have any suggestions about strengths and weaknesses prompt? Technically I wrote about my perfectionism but there seems to be bias about saying that verbally or written. I genuinely feel my perfectionism has been a weakness due to focusing on details so much that I have missed deadlines before or taken too long to work on things. Yet, people seem to feel it is a copout or you trying to disguise a strength as a weakness. I'm not sure about other people but I'm not lying about my perfectionism. I have seen real life consequences to it. I'm not trying to impress other people, I just get really caught up in details.
Hi Laurynd, I feel like for the strength and weakness part, you can write whatever is true to you and don't have to worry about the copout issue. I can clearly see it can be a weakness because some people may mess things up as they pay too much attention on small things and you can also use a real-life example for illustration.
@ACoolGoose @AmyS4 I was starting to doubt myself when I started looking into articles and YouTube videos on how to answer that question in preparation for interviews. Across the board, they all said they hated that response and I started thinking I don't want to isolate whoever will interview me by saying that even if to me, it is the truth. I did include some real life examples of specific "symptoms of perfectionism" and how it created a problem as well as how I have been working to combat it. I hope the admissions committee is as understanding as you all are because that seems to be something most "experts" on the issue agree about. Any suggestions in regards to what to say about my GPA since it can be considered problematic that it's only a little over 3.0/ explaining Cs and B- om my transcript? While they are accepted, nursing is a profession where I feel that it's unspoken that it's frowned upon to have grades like that.
laurynd, In the info session, he said Yale understands life happens. People have life events, children, etc, which sometimes impacts their academics. He suggested mentioning this in the additional uploads, again explaining how you are now ready to go to a school like Yale and take on the academic requirements necessary for success. I was a single mother throughout my first undergrad degree which definitely impacted my success. I have a 3.21 from my first undergrad and 3.4 from my BSN. I'll be focusing on explaining the life events that impacted a few poor grades I earned, explaining areas I improved to prevent that from happening again, and my commitment, etc. I was also a direct-entry midwife for 6 years so I'm leaning heavily on my clinical experience for the nurse midwifery program.
In your virtual info session this week, definitely ask them about some of these questions. They're very receptive, informative and truly want us to put our best presentation forward.
Hi everyone, my name is Steve and I am a fellow applicant for the Psych track. I just graduated from Stony Brook University with an MSW and my bachelors is in Psychology from LIU Post. Questions for the current students: What is campus housing like and is it included in the financial aid package? What is the typical weekly schedule like? What is the application decision time frame? Thanks in advance and good luck everyone!

Hi Steve, welcome to the boards. There is graduate student housing available if you are interested. It is a first come, first serve lottery. There is a date in June where Yale Student Housing puts all their open rooms on the website and you pick which one you would like to rent. I went through the process my first year and the rooms were all gone in 10 minutes, if you wait to look around they get snapped up really quickly. I ultimately didn’t go with graduate housing and just found a place to rent around old campus like most of the other nursing students.
Housing and related costs are included in the cost of attendance which is used to calculate our financial aid package.
Typically weekly schedule for GEPNs is classes Monday, Thursday, and Friday. With ILCE on either Monday or Friday. Anatomy and anatomy lab is Thursday afternoon your first semester with a weekly med-surg review afterwards around 4pm. You will have clinical or labs on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday either one 12 or two 6 hour shifts on two different days.
They changed the decision time frame from when I applied and it is a lot quicker now. I think last year they started to hear back in Oct but since the application deadline for this year is Nov 1st, it will probably be later for your cohort so expect it to be around end of Nov/Dec with interviews happen early next year in Jan/Feb. I believe all interview are now video conferences so you don’t have to fly in for the interview but I would urge everyone who is interested in attending to visit the nursing school and the campus and see if the “feel” is the right fit for you. There are a number of info session days as well that you can opt to attend on campus. A number of students have requested to visit the campus and sit in on classes for a day which is always an option for everyone as well. You can make the request through the Office of Student Affairs. There are also Scholar’s Day and Admitted Students day where you can come and visit the campus.
Hope that helps. Good luck to everyone as the application deadline approaches.
Thanks for all the info @Ohm108!!! Seriously this ia all good to know. Hopefully, ill be able to save money to come visit at some point. Already anxious to hear back and the deadline hasn't even hit yet. Need these holidays to come and go. I noticed in last year's that a lot of people heard back quickly despite them extending the deadline so I'm thinking mid February will still be around the time we get decisions back.
I did, I was on it an hour ago. Are you in central time zone? Because I almost missed it not realizing they meant 3pm eastern time. I could try to answer any questions you might have had or he said email ysn admissions because they check that pretty often.
Oh just to update everyone who cannot be in the virtual session Joseph said that we should hear about acceptances in January and interviews should be happening in december so apparently the later deadline is not going to change the timeline.

Oh that's true. Yes, I am around Chicago areas so I definitely missed it as I have a lab class from 1 to 3 pm, and did not realize it is the eastern time. Just curious are there any important information they shared during the meeting? Thanks so much for your response.
Really?? So am I, I'm a native actually so that's funny you mention Chicago and apparently Joseph lived here at some point too because he mentioned our transportation system. Anyways, the biggest takeaways I got from it were the timeline of hearing back from them, he mentioned that if you have extenuating circumstances to mention that in the supplementary part. And he said more than once do not try to place blame on anyone anywhere in your application.they understand that life happens, but don't try to place blame. He said typical range for goa is 3.2-3.4 but they've accepted people with lower and higher stats before. GRE they usually look for 50th percentile and if you are below in either try to show capacity via your transcipts and highlight that in supplemental information. Sorry if some of this is repetitive, I know some people have mentioned this already. He said you're more likely to reach the faculty and get them to like you if you're not generic in your responses. He said the biggest reason people are denied is because they don't show that they know the responsibilities of their specialty and being a np in general. He said it's important to show you understand the role you will be playing and be specific about how you ended up on this path since it's not an easy one. He mentioned the cost but I forgot to ask if that was the total or if that was per year, so I emailed them just now. He also said don't wait until you're accepted to look for money to pay, look now. Oh and the deadline for FAFSA for them is dec 1st so anyone who is not considered independent should arrange to do that with their parents asap and just in general work on that asap
