Yale GEPN 2014 Applicants

Published

It's probably too soon to start this thread- anyone else out there?

Hey guys, does anyone have any idea how many people were invited for interviews and how many will be accepted out of that pool? I'm so nervous and excited for the 24th!!! :)

201 people were invited to interview.

I know that YSN is recommending the Courtyard Marriott in Orange for $115 a night, but I just booked a hotel on hotwire for $95 (taxes included). Those looking for hotels might want to check hotwire.

201 people were invited to interview.

More than 600 applicants this year. More than 200 to midwifery.

For me it's coming out to $115 on Hotwire which includes taxes and fees, which is still cheaper than the Yale rate of $133 (including taxes and fees).

Where did you get this info? I emailed and asked what the numbers were for the Psychiatric specialty this year, but she would not tell me the specifics. I was told " Numbers tend to stress applicants out and are sometimes used for evil and not good!" which makes sense, but I was just curious :)

So in response to an unrelated question, ------- emailed me some statistics, which was really nice of her. "Now that decisions are out I can tell you we received 482 applications this year to the GEPN program and we are interviewing about 200 candidates. It breaks down to about 50 interviewees each in midwifery and family and a little over 30 each in acute care, psych, and pediatrics"

My dear friends,

I have a question... so if I have my interview on 31st when I get back from them about my admission?

Thanks!!!

A few months ago I did a telephone advising session with the director of admissions and she said that last year they had about 50 applications for the psyche program, conducted 32 interviews, and ultimately enrolled 18 students. I'd assume these numbers will roughly hold true for this year.

I'll hopefully be there in 1 year.;)

I called and asked a Yale admissions officer about that same dilemma, she said they do not reschedule interviews, but phone interviews are OK.

It would be really great if Yale and UCSF coordinated interviews, being IMO their programs attract the same applicants.

That's so funny because I had the same dilemma last year (with a different school)! I used to be paranoid and think that the schools would hold interviews on the same day on purpose to see which students made an effort to visit where. Luckily I was saved by the Big Blizzard in CT and we were rescheduled for phone interviews.

Either way, I really don't think it matters if the interview is in person or not, unless you believe you excel at a particular format. If anything, it would be to your benefit to visit the campus and get a feel for the city as I would assume that the academic experience would be very different between Yale & UCSF/Penn/JHU etc.

I've just finished my first semester at YSN, and my short experience here so far has left me with the impression that Yale supports (and almost caters, really) students to the point where it's easy to feel as though you're always "at" Yale. Unless you're from the area, you can quickly find that most of your friends are classmates/Yalies, and what little free time you have away from studying may mostly be spent at Yale-affiliated socials, exhibits, happy hours, mixers, presentations, plays, classmate dinner parties or the Yale-subsidized graduate bar on the main campus ("All roads lead to GPSCY!"); and it's mostly because a lot of these activities are cheap or free. It may sound a bit suffocating for some, but for those of us from out of town that are new to the area, it's a bit comforting to know there's this sort of built-in support network of potential friends and activities available if you feel like seeking them out.

I've never been to UCSF, however I have been to San Fran before and the city is amazing. I'm sure a similar level of student support exists there as well as UCSF is a wonderful school, however I'm also certain that the sheer amount of opportunities and activities that exist in SF makes it easier to feel like you have a life "in" San Francisco, rather than "at" UCSF. Makes sense, I think?

That's really interesting ;-) I wonder why our stats differ (482 vs >600). I can't really say where I got this info without breaking the ToS.
