There didn't seem to be a main thread for applicants to Yale's GEPN program this year, so I thought I'd get one started. I'm applying for the midwifery specialty and am currently working on my application essays, having done everything else.
Is anyone else really struggling with the main essay? I've finished my apps to two other programs and was happy with how those essays came out, but Yale's essay guidelines as so restrictive that I feel like my essay is turning out all disjointed. The fact that we have to answer every aspect of every question in *exactly the order they list* (this is apparently something that you need to take very seriously) means that I'm having to tie myself in knots. I want it to be not only informative about me as an applicant but also a good piece of writing - and I feel like the essay format is making this kind of difficult.
Anyone else out there applying?
Does anyone know the timeframe for when the interviews are held?? I also received a quick email letting me know my application was complete. This process is driving me nuts!! I'm not sure whether I should feel confident or to keep myself feeling doubtful just so I don't get my hopes up! But at the same time, you want to have positive thoughts. ahhh..
Um...just got this email. This is disheartening, I was really excited about applying to the Adult-Gerontological NP program.
"Dear ******: I am writing to alert you of a very recent change to one of the programs at Yale School of Nursing. I have opted to reach out to you via e-mail so I can reach all of you as quickly as possible. The Board of Permanent Officers of the Yale School of Nursing voted yesterday to discontinue offering the Adult-Gerontological Nurse Practitioner program; effective immediately. This means the Admissions Committee cannot admit any new students to this program for Fall 2012. I would like to provide you with several options to consider in light of this change. And I ask that you please touch base with me, so that my office can facilitate these changes as quickly as possible for you..."
Most sincerely,
*******"
I just spoke with a group of gepn students who are on rotation at my hospital and they said that 4 out of 84 students were AGNP and most others were peds and midwifery. The other specialties were less in number than midwifery and peds but equal to each other in size. Apparently the AGNP track is by far the smallest.
The AGNP track is evidently discontinued...I'm not sure what exactly that means...though I'm sure I'll find out in class today :).
As for the sizes...Family is the largest this year with 17 people..Onc and Acute care are the smallest with 4. There are actually a lot of Adult (way more than 4)...so I'm not sure where that info was from...though I think that there's quite a few adult without the gero aspect, and only 4 specifically in the gero program, if that makes sense. Peds and midwifery are both about 12, and WHNP this year is about 10.
thanks for all the info. super helpful and answers some of my curiosity! i was a AGNP specialty who is trying to figure out what specialty is the best fit at this point.
i'd be interested in hearing why the gero program was discontinued if you hear anything in class today. i am under the assumption that it's budget related...
any opinions, words or advice, red flags in regards to either the acute care or oncology specialties?
PamCNM2Be - I have a million questions (apart from the unanswerable question on everyone's mind: "am I going to get in?")!
I applied for the FNP track. I've obsessively read everything available about the program itself, but from the perspective of a current student maybe you can tell me:
1) how would you describe the caliber of your classes, clinicals, instructors etc so far?
2) any idea about job-hunting experiences from recent grads? and
3) how's New Haven? Where do you live, what do you like/dislike, costs etc?
seems silly, but I'm having a hard time adjusting to the idea of moving to CT from very-warm, very-sunny, very mellow Austin TX. Lived in MN for years and I think I have Post-Traumatic Snow Disorder :)
Any insight is much appreciated! I can't get personal messages on this site but you can also send me a message through gmail, first part of address is jenadair70. Finals must be coming up....good luck!
