It didn't look like there was a thread for 2011 Yale GEPN applicants. Since the application recently opened, I thought I'd start a thread to see if anyone else is starting to work on their application.
Anyone else out there?

So my goodness I was just accepted into Midwifery from off the waitlist and I have a whopping 3 DAYS to decide yale over columbia! Are there any current GEPNers (or soon-to-bes) that can answer a couple questions? I was wondering if Yale offers any international opportunities for midwifery students and what kinds of opportunities yale has for nursing students outside of the classroom (volunteering and such)?
Is working as an RN common during the masters portion?
Any other insights would be SO appreciated

I would like to know what you hear as well kelysee---i'm applying next year, and I'm actually hoping to become a cnm/fnp not sure how that works at Yale, but i'd like to know what you think of the cnm program at Yale! (or columbia's for that matter)

Congrats on your acceptance :). I'm going to be attending as a GEPN midwifery specialty this fall and I'm so excited!! On my interview day, one of the current midwifery students mentioned that there are fewer international opportunities than she had originally hoped there would be. She said that there were some opportunities, but that its not that easy and funding is pretty limited. I can't really speak to volunteer opportunities for students outside the classroom, but I know that the GEPN year at least will be very busy. We'll be in class 2-3 days a week the entire day, have reading at night, and have two days of clinical a day that we need to prepare care plans for. So, while I'm sure it will be important for us to maintain some semblance of ourselves, there will be limited time for extracurricular activities the first year. As for the ability to work during specialty years, I think its not uncommon per se but we don't get licensed as an RN until the second half of our first specialty year. But from the students I've talked to, they say that once licensed as an RN its usually not difficult to find a job while finishing up the MSN curriculum. Good luck with your decision! I myself was choosing between schools - including Columbia, until I decided on Yale :) Hope that helps some!

I feel your pain! I reached out to the friend of a friend and am awaiting a response... I'd confirm both schools as I was easily equally as impressed with each program once I got to spend time around the faculty and get an understanding of clinical placements.
Hey sgmaygeorge! What did you end up deciding? I ended up going with Columbia -- I spoke with some students who did the program and had overall positive things to say about the experience and said almost everybody had a great experience with placements -- especially the students who were proactive about it. The alums I talked to are now current preceptors and said that the students they work with now all are enjoying the program and have really positive things to say. (Plus, I live in NYC w/ my boyfriend right now so Columbia was way more convenient for me location-wise.) It was a REALLY tough choice, and I actually sent my decline to Columbia on March 20 and then climbed into bed and realized I didn't want to leave the city, so I called the next day to have them change my decision! Talked with psych students from Columbia on the 21st and decided it made the most sense. I feel like you really can't go wrong though -- it really just comes down to what your priorities are and overall lifestyle preference. I heard some further information about the adult psych issues at Yale but didn't hear anything about family psych. I'm sure it's great though -- I loved the faculty at Yale and I have heard only wonderful things about psych faculty at Columbia, so I think it will work out either way. :)
thanks for the input, i've decided to accept and go to yale! still can't believe it!
does anyone know if there's a fb group or something for our class?

Yup there is an official one created by Yale...they send the link out in a follow-up email after you've accepted. See if this works: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/home.php?sk=group_146959355368800&ap=1
It's called YSN New Students

I would also be interested in hearing peoples experiences about the Family Psych NP program. I'm on the fence between Yale and Vanderbilt. Both are awesome schools, but if students are much happier at one program than another, that would really sway my decision. Does anybody know anyone I could talk to?

Hi Jon, Have you decided between Yale and Vanderbilt? I am also debating between these two but for the FNP specialty.

estrella13, I believe that I just accepted your spot as part of the incoming GEPN class for midwifery. I am absolutely thrilled. I am sure that your experience elsewhere will be fabulous!
I recently requested access to that facebook group, but no one has let me in. Could someone help me out?

Dear friends,
I have a hard time making a decision. I have been accepted to Yale and University of Tennessee Knoxville FNP programs (both 2yrs). I've been to Knoxville b/c they accepted me first and I liked it there, so I accepted their invitation and was getting ready to go there in the summer. However, a month later I've received an invitation from Yale which I had not really hoped for very much. I was so happy about being admitted to Yale - a dream come true. I have not been to New Haven yet. After giving it about a week of thought I made a decision to go to Yale and accepted also. However, I thought I would be happier after making this decision, but I still have doubt a few days after - where to go??? Has anyone been in a similar situation and can give advice? Sometimes it is easier and clearer to see from the side..... Anyone having expirience at Yale or UTK - do you have anything to say of encouragement or warning? I would really really appreciate any advice!

I am wondering did anyone apply to Johns Hopkins BSN to MSN program? It sounds like it is the same cost as Yale. Johns Hopkins has a summer start while other programs all seem to have fall starts. So I was wondering if acceptances for Johns Hopkins came around the same time as other Direct entry MSN programs like Yale?
I'm considering applying for Fall 2012 to Yale. The only thing is I'm trying to save money and another year of saving money would go a long way so may push it off to 2013.
