Yale GEPN Applicants 2011

Published

It didn't look like there was a thread for 2011 Yale GEPN applicants. Since the application recently opened, I thought I'd start a thread to see if anyone else is starting to work on their application.

Anyone else out there?

Partera-I entered my assets (though I don't really have any). I'm not really sure what to make of the information it gave me at the end though. It says that my Direct Stafford Loan Estimate would be $12.5k. Since it seems like the programs are at least $30k/year (not including living expenses) and my husband only makes around $30k/year, this seems like it could be an issue.

Sorry to hear about your flight delay! I am about to leave for New Haven, hoping the two-hour drive doesn't turn into a four-hour drive! Good luck with your phone interview!!

Hey, fried zucchini. I'm flying all the way from San Francisco. I took a red-eye and have made it to Philadelphia, but I've already had three flights canceled going into either New Haven or Bradley. Flights seem to be looking better for this afternoon, but I'm definitely considering taking a train from here instead... Maybe you could also look into that option?

Phone interview went really well this morning. Turns out that my interviewer didn't make it to Yale, either! She got snowed in at home.

Hope things are going well for everyone else!

hi everyone!

I had my interview @ yale yesterday, and I'm just wondering if anyone else felt a little disappointed by the environment/overall feeling of ysn -- it is in a rough part of new haven, not close to the yale campus at all, and just felt really isolated from the rest of the yale community. the ysn community felt good, but the building itself literally felt like a jail, was REALLY hard to navigate through, surrounded by iron bars, etc. just not what I expected from my graduate school experience! did anyone else have that feeling or is this important to anyone else? at other schools, you are part of a campus and seem to be part of a community...thoughts?

I agree that the building is nothing to be excited about. I did several laps before I found where we were supposed to be! I live in CT and would be commuting if I get in, and I'd have to really check out the walk from the train station to the building, because it doesn't look that safe, especially when it gets dark so early this time of year!

But I did love the sound of the program and the support and innovation they bring to it. I also love how it sounds like you have a decent amount of input into your clinicals so that you can reach your nursing goals. And I could definitely picture myself at the end of the year party where you drink wine and make casts of your *nursing* hands....sounds perfect!

i totally agree!!!! i just came back from an interview at duke, and the nursing school was a CAMPUS. it was a BUILDING. not an old high school that has a space shared with a dialysis clinic (like yale). that, honestly, was my one complaint about yale's program. the lack of an actual school feel. but, i guess, the plus side to that is is that you spend very little time in that building and most of your time in clinicals.

I loved these aspects of the program as well. I really enjoyed how they devoted an entire day to information and Q&A, as it was very helpful and has definitely swayed me. If I have the honor of being admitted, I think I will be able to make a sound decision. I can't say as much for schools who do not conduct, at the very least, an interview or admit day.

did anyone ask their interviewers or admissions when we might hear back? i didn't but wish i had :o

I emailed Sandra after my interview and she said that the admissions committee will meet on February 23rd and we should receive our decisions the following week. So, unfortunately, a bit more of a wait to go. Hang in there!

Oh wow, the 23rd! What a wait. Last night I misread your post as the 3rd. That would have been more of a relief.

Any idea how many people made it through the first round to interview? And then how many they accept?

Hey minkewhale. I think that the stats for interviews and acceptance differ for each specialty. I'm an FNP applicant and was told that they get around 90-100 apps for FNP, interview around 40 and accept about 25.

I know that FNP is one of the more competitive specialties, but midwifery is the most competitive (I think).
