Yale GEPN Applicants 2011

Published

It didn't look like there was a thread for 2011 Yale GEPN applicants. Since the application recently opened, I thought I'd start a thread to see if anyone else is starting to work on their application.

Anyone else out there?

I'd like that!

Sounds good! If you want to email me, you can write to [email protected]

Look forward to talking to you!

Hi! Just out of curiosity, does the amount of interviews they offer depend on specialty? I received one and my specialty track is Peds... but I was just curious as to how many interviewees actually end up being accepted... What program are you in? Do you love it? Did it take time to adjust to New Haven?

Sorry for the delay nikki! I do believe that that the amount of interviews they offer depends on the specialty. I'm not too sure how many interviewees actually end up being accepted, but I believe it's over half (however, I could be mistaken). I am in adult psych and I do love the gepn portion! It's not easy, but they give you so many resources and the faculty really wants you to succeed, they're absolutely terrific. I'm actually from around new haven and commute in, so I'm not the best person to ask about that heh... sorry. I hope that helped!

hey! is any one from Hartford, Boston, or Providence and driving down who has their interview on January 20th? I will be flying out of one of these airports on Friday to fly to Salt Lake City, and was looking into alternate forms of transportation in case the weather is bad and the trains aren't running.

Hi All:

I'm actually from CT and went on a pre-interview/meeting with the head of the Yale GEPN Program. She went over all the details for the program and although I received all the information it's quite pricey so I won't be applying -- but GOOD LUCK to all of you who are.

She went on to explain that it is EXTREMELY difficult to get into their Midwifery program because they have so many applicants for that, so make sure your up on your game!

Still looking into some BSN/MSN programs but haven't found much luck! I'm also applying to Columbia, UCONN and looking into BC, Ohio, UCSF :) We should keep in touch whoever else is applying...

Happy New Year!

Nursing School applications fall 6 percent

By BJ White

Contributing Reporter

Thursday, March 4, 2010

The number of applications to the Yale School of Nursing's largest master's program fell 6 percent for the 2010-'11 academic year, Director of Admissions Angela Kühne said Wednesday.

The Graduate Entry Pre-Specialty in Nursing program, which offers a master's degree to students with no previous nursing education, received 352 applications for a class of about 110 to 115 students this admissions season, a drop from the yearly average of 375, Kühne said. Kühne and School of Nursing Dean Margaret Grey attributed the drop in applications to the school's elimination of its spring application deadline and to the recession causing fewer people to make a career switch into nursing.

"[in the recession,] fewer people are interested in moving cross country for a program like this," Kühne said.

Because there are fewer nursing positions available in the recession, applicants to the Graduate Entry Pre-Specialty in Nursing program-who already hold bachelor's degrees in other fields-may not want to pursue a second career with most nursing jobs already filled, Grey said. By eliminating the spring application deadline, no applicants were rolled over to the fall, which also caused the number of applications to drop, Kühne said.

"In the past, people in the spring who weren't accepted were rolled over to the fall," Kühne said. "This is the first year without rollover, so there are fewer folders than last year."

While the number of applications to the Graduate Entry Pre-Specialty in Nursing program has fallen this year, Kühne said the school's total admissions rate should remain steady at about 37 percent. Kühne added that she did not expect the yield rate of about 55 to 60 percent to change.

Applications to the Academic Master's in Nursing program- intended for students with a nursing background-stayed level at 75 applications, she added.

Neither Kühne nor Grey said they expected a change in financial aid.

The Yale School of Nursing ranked seventh in the most recent U.S. News & World Report survey of American nursing schools.

37 percent... thats pretty good. I am getting excited/nervous for my interview on the 20th! Is it weird if I bring my mom with me to the orientation portion?

Does anybody know anything about the psych NP program at Columbia versus the psych NP program at Yale? I'm dying to get a really good comparison of the two so I can be better informed if I get into both, but info on this seems to be hard to come by. As far as I can tell they are fairly comparable. Anybody have any sources or info they feel like sharing?

Yogaseli-

That's so funny that you ask that because I was wondering the same thing! My mother and I are super close and I'm flying all the way out from California so she is going with me and I would hate to leave her alone. However, I am not sure how bringing the moms along would reflect, i.e. whether it would look immature.

Tanya

Hey Tanya!

Thats exactly my concern. It would be great to have her listen in on the orientation portion but I may have her drop me off and scope out New Haven for like 5 hours.. which I would feel bad about -- What day is your interview?

My interview for psych/mental health is on 1/21 and I am coming out on 1/20. How about you?

Oh! I will be there on the 21st as well and my interview is for family :)

Well maybe we could set our mothers up together so they're not alone lol. What other schools did you apply to or are you interviewing at and where are you from?
