Once again Yahoo is telling folks to drop the cubicle and go into nursing. I mean come on!!!!!!!!!! If they would check things out they would see many new Grads cannot find work now. They are proclaiming the mysterious 600,000 RN shortage again....................
Well that's certainly part of it...Sometimes I wonder if yahoo is being paid to throw these little ads out there by someone who can gain financially from it, like "for profit" schools. Just a thought!
The other part of it is that Yahoo! (and MSN and all the others) just recycle the same text over and over.
This is just a generic, boilerplate piece that relies on the same worthless Dept of Labor projections that have helped create the glut.

These articles are misleading and probably placed by an ad agency working for the private votech schools and very expensive colleges listed on the site. For any profession you click on you will get the same schools popping up regardless of what zip code you put in. The article is merely bait to get someone to follow the links. I saw some of these schools with booths at the festivals around the county as well so they probably have room in their classes due to the large price tag. Also, I don't believe all of these schools even have an RN program. Some are more private votech and offer only the MA program.
HR and NM are going to have to take some chances hiring NG because the longer they wait it be more of a shortage when the baby boomers retire. Then they will hiring all kinds of people unable to train them appropriately. I would hire one a month until the position is filled. The NG have a 90 day probation period. I once was a new grad and someone took a chance on me.
You are getting your facts wrong OP; yes Yahoo! posted that, but look who they are quoting the 600,000 figure to - the Dept. of Labor's BLS statistics that range from *2008 --> to 2018* in between THESE years there will be 600k nursing positions open.
I do not care if it is those years there will NEVER be a shortage of that many RNs, They have been saying for YEARS there is a shortage before the recession, and there was none then either.
I just don't know why so many people think anybody can be a nurse or make it through nursing school. So many people enter the programs around here and half usually drop out because the curriculum is either to stressful, to difficult, or to time consuming for them. I'm all for giving it your best shot, but it seems like people would seriously think about what being or becoming a nurse would entail before saying
"well, I could always go to nursing school and make some decent money". A nurses salary ain't always so hot, first of all.

I believe there is a nursing shortage. No one knows how big is the shortage. We all know that there are several hospitals trying to go Magnet Status. So this means, when this facility puts out a job offer, it is going to say BSN desired or required. There are several students who are graduating with a ADN. If the facilities are unable to get what they want, they have hire someone who can fill the position. What make is so bad several of these grads are taking anything they can grab until that year or two comes along, then go where they want. I know one thing. I am not going no where. I am going to keep my job.
heartsopenwide is exactly right on! im one of those "experinced nurses" who are so burnt out from all the political BS that i physically cannot get myself to work bedside nursing full-time:cry:! to keep my sanity and myself in this profession i work 24hrs in the hosp and part time in a clinic!
