Wrote Dr. Phil yesterday....

Published

I emailed Dr. Phil regarding having a show that specifically addresses the so-called nursing shortage and the issues that create it........among other things.

The reply I received was that I would be contacted if my request to have this show is approved as a topic for his show. The response goes on to say how many requests they receive a day, blah, blah, blah, so basically......don't hold my breath. :p

Next on my list are the congressmen and those in the White House. I also plan to write "this nurse's story" and seek to get it in print in a magazine that is well read by the public, etc.

One step, two steps, three steps, more....one day at a time. :nurse:

John......right on! We shall persevere onward no matter the cost because quitting is never an option of success for me. :nurse:

CCU NRS....nice letter you wrote. Do you plan to send it to your state congressman, your hospital Medical Chief of Staff, and other political arenas?

We each have a different story to tell, yet we are all saying that nursing in today's hospitals are in desperate need of serious improvement.

Not one of us has all the answers, but collectively we can come up with enough truths to make a case. Pulling together is the key to success in every walk of life. It takes a village.........:)

Fab 4 might be onto something with that print reporter idea.

A reporter told me that the week between chistmas and new years........you can get ANYTHING printed !!

'Cause everyone who writes at the newspaper is off...so the few who are there will print any story....

I've capitalized on this twice before...and had my stories printed...they even rewrote them a little...to give them a more journalistic-professional sound...

So, that's definitely a shot, if cheerful could have something ready to send to the paper in a week....a long article is good....they will put their own tweaking to it and publish it during that long and lonely week.

Hmmmm...now that is an idea I simply should not refuse, passing thru. Guess I'll put on my specs, and get busy with that holiday letter. I'm feeling fiesty enough right now to write such a letter. Thanks for the suggestion. :specs:

I can't help wonder if there's a perception problem with the general public.

I was in the bank the other day, and a teller was talking about how nurses supposedly make too much money.

With the grocery workers on strike over rising health care costs, and other workers having to pay higher premiums, maybe they don't want to hear about the plight of nurses, because they believe nurses might be part of the problem.

I know that in reality it has nothing to do with nurses, and everything to do with HMOs and hospital management.

But I'm not sure the general public understands that.

Any thoughts?

Hmm...sounds like a plan to me. Should we all do this, guys and gals?? Will reporters print our letters anonymously? I have no doubt that hospitals will view our letters as hostile and will retailiate against those of us who are employed. IF they know who we are that is...:stone

Fear of retaliation was the exact reason Peter denied being best of buds with Jesus. Jesus told Peter that he would deny him before the rooster crowed three times.........and he did. :o I believe that example is in the Holy Bible for reasons such as this. Employees from all professions are afraid of what will happen to them and their job if they take a stand for what is right. Putting that example in the Holy Bible was God's way of letting us know how "human" we are, and how subject to cowering in times of truth we become........out of fear for being retaliated against or not liked. HE forgives us for HE knows we know not what we do.

"Fear of retaliation" is a weapon an employer may use against an employee who stands up for themselves when justice is not being presented in a work place.

As a woman of color, I would not be living free in this country if it weren't for those who took a stand against slavery and injustice towards mankind.

As a woman period, all females would not be able to pursue the careers they do, and compete in "a man's world" (so to speak) had some brave soul not stood up for equality for women.

As a woman of color, I would not be riding anywhere but in the back of the bus had it not been for Rosa Parks bravery that day she took a stand for her right to sit at the front of the bus.

Shall I go on?

That said, those who will stand up for justice and speak out IN SPITE OF FEAR OF RETALIATION will prevail because Truth always wins over Evil in the long run...nothing worth having comes free.......there's a price...a costly price to everything. Remember the HIGH PRICE paid for mankind's sins?

Then we have those who are afraid to make change happen because of "fear of being retaliated against". They are the ones who sit back in fear of being discovered that they may agree with the one standing up for justice, for change, for safer working conditions for all involved.

Which group will each of us stand in?

As for me..........I will stand on the truth until the day I leave this planet. :nurse:

I agree with much of what you have said. And please don't take these remarks the wrong way, but I also think it's a bit more complicated.

I was a reporter for several years. I worked with whistleblowers in all kinds of professions, medical and otherwise, who exposed all kinds of wrongdoing.

Most of the time their lives were completely ruined, and truth/justice did not prevail. They were often fired, their wives and children put under tremendous financial strain. Divorce was not uncommon.

Sometimes good things were accomplished, but just as often, the whistleblowers' efforts were made in vain. It's a tremendous sacrifice that doesn't always yield the same results as Rosa Parks or other well-publicized cases.

I do wish that Truth would prevail over Evil in the long run but, unfortunately, it doesn't always work out that way. After seeing the damage first hand, I personally wouldn't think less of anyone who decided not to do it.

When I wrote my first letter, I sent it to four different newpapers. Three published it.

It doesn't have to be a "whistle-blower" letter.

Politicians get there points across without alienating people.

With all communications such as this, the writer has to write his/her objectives , "make a list, a outline", prior to starting.

The writer has to put himself and the situation in a win-win frame of discussion.

The goal isn't to rip the hospital, government, the nursing profession, etc.

(Well, not in the beginning anyway.)

It could be written as a human interest story. E.g., " I was a patient in a hospital and this is what happened to me...and how the nurses shortage impacted my care. "

I'd tell a few short stories about what nurses are experiencing from my own personal knowledge.

I wouldn't get personal - - attack one hospital....no, I'd then cite

other situations that illustrate my true message - - which would remain known only to me.

You don't have to draw a picture of a dog, to convey to people what a dog is. You go all the way around the obvious.

That's politics.

I have an idea, What if someone like me, who lives on a low disability income wrote a letter to the press? Do you think they could take away what I don't have? The things of value I DO HAVE are the love of my Father God, and since He was the very creator of all good, but made evil by the covering cherub who was chief, but rebelled, and became the devil who influences all evil, the only conclusion I can come to is, "THERE IS NO CONTEST BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL. GOOD WILL PREVAIL! Romans 8:28
