I emailed Dr. Phil regarding having a show that specifically addresses the so-called nursing shortage and the issues that create it........among other things.
The reply I received was that I would be contacted if my request to have this show is approved as a topic for his show. The response goes on to say how many requests they receive a day, blah, blah, blah, so basically......don't hold my breath.
Next on my list are the congressmen and those in the White House. I also plan to write "this nurse's story" and seek to get it in print in a magazine that is well read by the public, etc.
One step, two steps, three steps, more....one day at a time.
to lable of trouble maker . it seem that to speak up ot rock the boat is founded upon. It is a fine thread to protect your position and respect ( so called by administration) when identifing problems . It came when I was in charge and was not provided the support for calling in extra help when in my opinion we needed it. It funny in one side of the administrators mouth they say it up to tou You make the judjment call and in the other .They comdem your independent thinking . It boils down to money in my opinion. intrenched and money bonuses to make goals and levels . IWe must remember it is a business and we are the worker. Until we are considered professional services as are Physicians we will alway face this in out profession as healthcare providers.
I agree with MattsMom that there are al ot of runses that have left the feild or are working in that direction that would be out loudest speakers.
Not that I have a ax to grind but I have been a male nurse for 24 years and have worked in a number of different capasities. I see the facts and the reality that over the past 24 years I have never been able to keep up with inflation. Once I came to this conclutuion and Im a hard learner I realized I needed to do something else for me . Own My own business.
I also believe Once a Nurse always a Nurse. But that doesnt mean I have to give up on my dreams.
I hope none of you give up either.

lizz........thank you for your perspective and thoughts. By the way, in my faith TRUTH will most definitely PREVAIL over Evil in the long run. Things may look one way to us when we are expecting a different outcome, yet the ONE whom I look up to already knows the beginning and the end of things. I believe very strongly that those who think they have won when things go their evil way, will be the ones paying the heavier price in the long run of things. And that settles it for me. :)

I agree...I doubt we are much better off now than we were in the 70's when I consider cost of living issues. My raises over the years seldom keep up with inflation, I've noticed. In fact, the only time I've gotten a decent raise is when I've quit for another facility...as management tends to work hard to find reasons NOT to give retained staff a raise.
I'm glad you are doing well now John! Must be very rewarding to be an entrepeneur! :roll

I believe our strongest voices can come from those nurses who have left the field or no longer are controlled by facilities and corporations. I guess what I don't understand is why everyone is not speaking up...if ALL nurses would speak up, TPTB could not discriminate against those of us who DO. Our weaker members lack of voice defeats our strongest voices if we act alone....and I have become a victim of this phenom over and over again. It gives me cause for pause.
Sad truth is over and over again in my anti-union area of the South, I am encouraged by my peers to speak up only to be scapegoated later. One of these days my reputation through Group One, etc will be destroyed enough that I will not be able to find a facility job. Anti union, anti 'troublemaker' managers are quite ruthless with nurses. Only being honest here, and I realize that by God's grace alone am I still working as a nurse. I have been vindictively reported to the BON and only prevailed through His promise that I would 'not be found guilty, He would not allow my life (livliehood) to be taken from me in court'.
My trust is not in man but in God. But I feel He expects me to be intelligent as well, and does not require I sacrifice myself when my family still desperately needs my income. So I need not feel I must act rashly...I guess that's what I'm trying to say.
I applaud those among us who DO act positively for our profession's sake, and will continue to do so. We all have our contributions to make, IMO.
