Wrote Dr. Phil yesterday....

Published

I emailed Dr. Phil regarding having a show that specifically addresses the so-called nursing shortage and the issues that create it........among other things.

The reply I received was that I would be contacted if my request to have this show is approved as a topic for his show. The response goes on to say how many requests they receive a day, blah, blah, blah, so basically......don't hold my breath. :p

Next on my list are the congressmen and those in the White House. I also plan to write "this nurse's story" and seek to get it in print in a magazine that is well read by the public, etc.

One step, two steps, three steps, more....one day at a time. :nurse:

are you trying to get attention to yourself or the nursing profession? You certainly don't speak for me.

I don't understand this post. What do you have a problem with about getting more focus on the nursing shortage? I didn't take it as an attempt for personal gratification.

I agree that Oprah may be more receptive to the issue. DR. PHIL seems to like resolving conflict in interpersonal relationships.

Anyway, if you get to go on the air and speak about nursing, I'd be very proud and supportive.

Right on weezie! :)

I agree with you that we should all join forces and stand as one unit. I profess nothing short of this. Every nurses voice is needed in order to resolve the problems we share as a profession. :nurse:

Nurse Recruiters work hard to recruit and hire nurses, but the downfall is not how to bring nurses to the jobs, but how to retain them. Yes, I know about retention. In college, I was a member of a nursing retention committee. It is very very essential that hospitals begin to question why the retention of nurses is at its lowest point. Unless they do, they will keep professing to the media and wasting senseless dollars on the "nursing shortage" that has NEVER truly existed.

Hummmm. . . . . I've been asking for tow years now, but will ask again;

Wonder what would happen if Oprah, Dr. Phip, newspapers, etc. received 10,000 letter, e-mails, etc. every week for the next six or eight weeks?

As to Congressmen and legislators, most are in the pockets of the Health Industry, but it never hurts to try. Public education as to what nurses really do, their value to society, the reason for the false nursing shortage, facility games and lies, etc. is one of the things most lacking in nursing. Lord know no one else is going to do it; and getting the public informed and educated wure would help.

This is a good idea but I think I am at the point where I can't stand to think about it anymore much less write about it.

How about someone here coming up with a brief, concise, to the point letter that all could print out, sign their own name and send in?

Also, how about someone posting all the addresses for where to send it? For example, addresses for Oprah, Dr Phil, Montel Williams, Dateline, 60 minutes, Primetime, 48 hours, ABC news, NBC news, CBS news.

I will at this time apologize to Cheerfuldoer and any and all that feel I was personally attacking anyone or breaking unification.

I apologize!

I was only attempting to understand if the person who is willing to represent Nursing as a profession and the nursing shortage had coherent, cohesive thought processes and an Outline for explaining and resolving the issues at hand.

Maybe you can come up with something, brief, concise, and to the point that we can all use.

I am not an activist I would just like to know that those who are have a good knowledge base and are going to present the issues with some intelligent thought processes and actually help the issue.

I'm all for that. Now if someone would just do it.

Cheerfuldoer....thanks for going that extra mile!!

I too have emailed my congressmen/women and also Oprah as well. I also speak to a state senator who lives in my neighborhood when I go on my walks. She is often walking her dog, so I have chatted with her from time to time. Her sister is a nurse and she KNOWS the plight of what we face on a daily basis. She states to continue to bombard your state officials and anyone else that you can email WHO might listen.

I have 5 aunts who range from age early 60's to mid 70's....all retired nurses. I have forwarded your thread to them...they are quite interested and have pretty much the same complaints that we nurses have today. They say the only thing that has changed are the uniforms....some of them had to wear black stockings and black shoes with their white dresses!! They also said that if it wasn't for their spouses they would not have had health insurance when they retired. All of them had crappy retirement packages/pensions...and these nurses stayed at the same hospital until retirement age!! Oh well..another thread in itself.

Again, lots of luck and I hope that you email Oprah as well. Take care.
