Written up for refusing to work on days off

There are rumors at my job that management is going to start "writing up full time nurses" who don't want to come in and work on their days off. I wonder if this is just a "false rumor" or if management can write up a nurse for this reason?

Reminds me of the time when a new LTC administrator stated that all call offs required providing your own replacement in addition to calling her, at her home, no matter the time of day or night, to explain yourself. I'm being rushed semi-conscious to the ER and you expect me to call you to give you the name of the person who is substituting for me? Ha, ha. The nurses quit, one by one.

I had a boss who did this. Someone contacted the labor board, and the facility was reprimanded, and told it is illegal to require a worker to find their own replacement if they call off.

typical LTC management mentality..... I hate working LTC......... LTC is the dregs of nursing. where do they find these administrators and DON's????? they are the biggest morons I have ever seen.........

I saw your other post, congratulations on getting back into the hospital environment! But I just had to say, it sounds like you were in a very poorly run facility. Certainly those exist, but so do beautiful, well run facilities. Not all are "the dregs" of nursing. They are places where our parents and grandparents may choose (or need) to live.

I sincerely congratulate you on all your hard work, and on finding your new hospital position !

I sure hope I find one of those "beautiful well-run facilities" some day. Sadly, I have only worked in nursing homes that can only be described as the worst of the worst nursing homes. Yes, it is a mystery. Where do they find those LTC managers? They are indeed the biggest morons I have ever met.

If a manager wants to get rid of you, they will write you up for things that their "pets" don't get writen up for. They will drive you to quit or systematically work you up to termination. Furthermore, 99% of people in LTC are already exhausted by the time their day of comes around, rendering us semi-useless at home. Ask oue spouses and kids if we should be guilted into working extra shifts!

I hope so, too! Some of the best-run facilities do seem to be smaller, privately-owned ones, as opposed to some of the large facilities owned by faceless corporations where profit is the ONLY thing that matters.

I completely understand what you mean about the poor management....in my area some of those managers seem to just move around from facility to facility, taking their poor management skills with them! I got out of LTC many years ago, but still miss caring for the residents. Good luck to you!

I take offense at your post. I worked in the hospital...there was mandatory overtime there. There were lazy nurses and stupid doctors there yet I am not going to slander the entire medical system over one bad experience.

My administrator has a PhD. I have the highest IQ of anyone I know....certainly not lazy or a moron.

You won't succeed anywhere with an attitude like yours.

No offense intended. I understand that there are indeed beautiful well-run nursing homes obviously run by intelligent, loving and caring human beings. CapeCodMermaid is one of those persons and is in charge of one of these beautiful and well run nursing homes. I am not talking about CapeCod Mermaid and other good human beings like CapeCodMermaid. I am talking about the many "worst of the worst" nursing homes that I have personally worked in which only cared about making money and making staff as miserable as possible.

I go to work and work my butt off all shift. Now I am hearing that it is not OK for me to have a day off!!!!! Really!!!! What will they think of next?

Hi there Blackcat99,

I don't think CapeCodMermaid was referring to your post (sorry if I'm wrong, CCM, but I thought maybe you were referencing an earlier post).

Good luck to you, Blackcat99! I hope the management at your facility doesn't actually intend to implement such a bone-headed policy. Makes you want to run for the hills....:cautious:

Just another thought....I have worked in a facility with mandatory overtime, but it involved staying past your scheduled end of shift, and we certainly weren't disciplined for saying "no" to coming in on days off.

My thoughts exactly!!! My house looks like a complete disaster by the end of my stretch, and I need my days off just to get caught up on the laundry and catch up with my family! And to be completely honest, I don't WANT to work extra shifts! 40 hours/week is more than enough for me! If I could work less I would, spending time with my family is far more important than working overtime. Tomorrow is never a guarantee!

OMG that is so true! Someone once said to me, "No one ever reached the end of their life and said 'Gee, I wish I would've worked MORE' " .

I love ( & desperately need) my days off. We all do! Have a great Sunday tomorrow (and I hope you all are off tomorrow , haha!)
