I want to work for a psych hospital and the one that's 50 minutes from me has already turned me down for an interview. Only other one that is even an option is (on a GOOD traffic day) an hour and a half from home.
Would it be worth it to drive that far...if I worked 3 12's? Weekend option? (this is what I would hope for)...
I have not submitted an app yet, don't even want to submit one if I would not seriously consider interviewing for the job. There would be many benefits to working at the psych hospital over where I am now (currently part-time, no benefits, hate the management style, have to take call frequently for little pay, VERY little training) and most of all, I love psych. It would also be nice to only work twice a week and have the week off, even if there were some recuperating time involved from working nights.
Don't know what the pay would look like, it would probably be weekend option nights, so probably more than I make now. Just mostly deliberating about the drive
Did you notice the trend? Most of us who have done it only did it for a short time (18 mos is the longest so far) and then couldn't take it anymore. I'm sure there are a few who did it for much longer but the majority realized it's much harder than it initially sounds. If you didn't have a job and absolutely needed one to avoid starving in a cardboard box then maybe I'd be more positive, but the reality is it really isn't worth it.
I've met lots of people who commuted that far for work but that all either 1. had friends in the area that they would stay at their houses to sleep or 2. got a dirt cheap studio to sleep in. Nobody can work all night and then drive that long to get home afterwards.
I've worked in several places as an RN. All places have downfalls. . nowhere is perfect, however; not all of them are soul sucking horrible (and there are those places). If where you are currently at makes you just miserable, then a change might be good. Keep in mind that you'll have to find a solution at some point in the future for the commute. . be it relocating, finding a cheap place to stay or staying with a friend.
Talk it over with your husband. . apply and good luck! :)

I would if childcare wasn't an issue. I would try to work back to back 12s and rent a hotel room or a room out of someone's house. And travel back and forth that way. You surely don't want to work 12 hour shift and drive 2 hrs and then have to be back the following day. That's not safe for you, for your patients or for the people on the road with you.

I have commuted 1 1/2- 1 3/4 hours each way to work for 9 years now, 5 days a week. It is tough, I won't lie. And, it is really tough in the winter when it takes longer and it beats up on the car.
But, it really has been worth it. The pay is better where I work, which makes paying the bills easier. And, housing is less expensive where I live. I just have to suck it up and tolerate the long commute.
It really can be done, especially if this job will help you reach your big picture / long term goals.
FYI, books on CD are awesome for longer commutes.

I did it! I had an hour and a half commute each way. I did it for 8 months then was finally able to move closer. I traveled at off hours which helped and mostly highway. Make sure you have a really reliable car and some good music! I also enjoy books on cd.
Apply for the job, see what they offer for pay. Then decide! Best of luck. I am also in GA and currently feeling a bit trapped where I am at. Trying to stick it out for a few more months.
