Would this be a big mistake?

Published

So I am a full time nursing student Monday- Thursday, and I was just offered a full time cna position in a really good hospital. This is my foot in the door only issue is I go to school during the day and the shift would be 11-7 full time. While it sounds perfect there are days I have to be at school at 8 or 10. Would this be a mistake? I want to really focus on studies but I need my foot in the door. Any opinions? Advice?

Yeah going through nursing school on no sleep is a bad idea. Many have done it and its possible. I'm just finishing up doing for my DNP studies but it is a tough way to go. As far as "getting your foot in the door". Its a hospital that probably employs thousands. Apply for and take a job that suits you when it suits you

Don't do it. Clinicals and preparation for clinicals can be intense and time consuming. Focus on school. The opportunity(s) to get your foot in the door will come later.

I wouldn't do it. Not full time.

Huge mistake. Unless you're in a situation where you NEED this job financially, don't do it.

It is really hard to work nights full-time and go to school during the day. If you have any other options, and don't absolutely need to do this for financial reasons, I would say don't do it.

My sister did do this to pay her way through school. Unless you absolutely have to work nights to pay the bills, I would not recommend it.

The trouble my sister ran into was that the day techs at the inpatient mental health facility were usually late. Work was supposed to end at 7 and she had to get to clinicals for 8 and she could not leave until she had handed off care to the day techs. The stress of rushing out after a long night of work was hard.

The manager was no help when she complained about the lateness. The manager knew my sister was in school and would be leaving for a new job in a couple of years and the latecomers were long-term employees.

What made it possible was that two of the night shifts were 12 hours on weekends, and the other 2 8-hour shifts were during the week. My sister had no pets, children, social life and wore scrubs 7 days a week for 2 years.
