Would adding a Bachelors in Accounting be worth anything to an RN's career?

Published

I have a bachelors in accounting,,but its basically worthless in small town like I'm in,,thats why in in nursing school now!!

Could this accounting degree ever come into play down the road when trying to get a higher postion at the hospital? Or were those school years a true waste of time?

Thanks.

I imagine you could apply for accounting jobs as well as nursing jobs. Do you think you might be interested in obtaining an MBA? You could go into the business side of health care. Perhaps be the business manager of a home health agency; that option comes to mind.

No learning is a waste of time. I am a 2nd degree nurse with a B.S. in Health Education and now a BSN in nursing. I am not sure how you can incorporate the two degrees in your case but I still do not consider it a waste. Hopefully another poster might offer suggestions. God forbid if you are no longer to practice as a nurse (injury, lack of employment, etc) you still have something to fall back on.

Caliotter beat me to it... lol. Before I answered no one had posted so disregard my "Hopefully another poster might offer suggestions." Caliotter provided a great example.

It strikes me that there are a number of organizations that utilize auditors in the healthcare arena and that they might be interested in someone who knows the ropes inside the hospital as well as having an accounting background.

The majority of nurses in my class at community college already had college degrees.

If you want the accounting degree to count "down the road" you will need some real working experience to go with that degree.

I have found that my other degree is pretty much useless as far as advancing in nursing. It is frustrating at times as I feel I would be able to do jobs such as unit educator, etc. but because I don't have years and years of nursing experience, I'm not considered a good candidate. I have 12 years of teaching experience, but it doesn't count in nursing. I find it frustrating. Just be prepared for that aspect of switching careers.

I have an MS in accounting, and a BA in psychology. I eliminated the MS from the resume, because it diverted the discussion away from nursing, and seemed to raise concerns around my career. Now I only include BA, and ADN.

People often come here asking about how their other, previous education/degrees will help them in nursing. I encourage you to turn the question around and think about it -- how much would a nursing degree help you in an accounting career??

i dont think any degree is a waste of time, if its what you like doing

No education is wasted. I have a BS in Manufacturing Engineering and a MS in Management. Sitting up nights unwinding differential equations or analyzing a start up plan definitely helped me develop my critical thinking skills (even if we didn't call it that). As several have already said, there are a lot of areas in healthcare where a business background combined with a nursing education would be very useful.
