Working while doing nursing degree

Published

Im starting an adult nursing degree in march and have been told when your not on placement its pretty much 9-5 mon-fri, was wondering how much extra work you have to do outside of uni and if you think it would be ok to work a 15 hour night shift on a saturday 5pm-8am sunday morning, i work in a residential home so its pretty quiet some nights so i might be able to do some study while im at work what do you think cos to be honest the extra £90 a week would be good! what do you think anyone thats already on a nursing degree?

I had zero support while I was in nursing school, so I HAD to work 60+ hours a week, all the way through. It is very hard, but can be done.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I worked 32 hours per week during nursing school. This consisted of two 16 hour shifts per week every Saturday and Sunday.

I worked full-time for the majority of nursing school. It is difficult, and you will be tired, but it can definitely be done. Hopefully you are good at managing your time

Specializes in ER trauma, ICU - trauma, neuro surgical.

I also worked throughout nursing school. I didn't know anyone that didn't work while in school. It depends on how much you need to study.

I think once I start clinicals I probably will cut down heavily on my work hours. Right now I'm keeping full time at the dr office where I work for the health insurance but when I get married in march I can have my husbands lol

I would prefer not to work at all though in that stage of school.

I'm interested in responses also. I'm working full time (8-5 mon-fri) and am hoping to start my pre reqs next summer or fall. I'm hoping I can still work full time once i'm in a nursing program, any thoughts on how that worked for anyone?

Specializes in ED.

I worked full time my first two semesters. My last two I was just too busy to work that many hours. 3rd semester I worked no more than 30 hours each week, for my final semester, no more than 24 hours. It can get rough, I'm finishing up my practicum right now and 36 hours a week at the hospital plus 22 hours a week at my job has been rough.

ok thank you all so much for your replies, made me lots less woried :) xx
