I work at a private home where LPN's are the primary nurses. There is a particular day nurse who complains about every other nurse who works with us. I'm sure that she also talks aboukt me. This woman doesn't even check on the pt's who are dying!!! She just takes the aides word for it. Report is recorded, and the charge nurse is the only one who listens to it. I often am on meds because I'm fairly new and shes been there 14 yrs. Anyway I asked her about a particular pt, and she practically bit my head off, and answered me like I was an idiot. I explained that I only get report on the days she is off, and I did not know the pts condition. A few minutes later I heard her complaining about it to the DON! She is very snippy with all employees, and is constantly on personal phone calls. But heaven forbid anyone else gets a call, she just gets rude, and talks behind there backs. UHHHH! Just thought I'd vent. :angryfire

That nurse needs an attitude adjustment bigtime, and I would
be helping her to get one.
There's nothing wrong with you wanting to know something
about the patients whom you are expected to give meds to.

There are people like that everywhere, unfortunately. :uhoh21: I've dealt with the same snappy you-should-have-somehow-known-that kind of person; the only way I can think of to deal with it is to be a nice as possible but continue to ask questions. You can't be expected to know everything ; obviously if you're asking a question, you need to know the answer, not rebuked for not knowing better.

eflynn,
i too have similar problems at times. i just get into my work, do the best job i can and yes, keep on smiling. also i would bluntly address her attitude in front of the DON, like say "im sorry you feel this way that you felt you had to yell at me for asking a question but for my patients best interest i need report" then wait for her reply. its kind of like a spoiled kid, they have bad habits because no one confronts them. they get away with it constantly, so why not do it? see what i mean? good luck and keep you head up!! that will irritate her the most!!!

Your snappy co-worker could truly benefit from some extensive psychotherapy. I've had lazy co-workers. They never change due to the fact that they never even had a good work ethic to begin with.

seems like report should be given each day for staff.

Here were I work, report is given on all three shifts. It is taped on a cassette
recorder so that if there is any question your can turn it back and listen to it again. All members of the oncoming staff listen to the report, not just RN's or
LPN's or nurses aides. Everyone that has anything to do with the patient(nursing staff) is allowed to listen to the report.

I can't imagine working anywhere I didn't get report on my patient's. Especially if I am giving meds. I want to know what is going on with my patients. This is definitely something I would be bringing up with my DON. Good luck.

You need to speak to the DON asap. This coworker is getting over on you in a big way. You should have a report on every patient you are expected to give care to on a shift. Even if the report is, no change in Mr. X, no new labs or orders. I bet her tune will change once you have a talk with DON but she will be angry so watch out for a backlash.
