This is my first post, although, I have been lurking on allnurses for quite a while:) The hospital I am employed with has been pretty laid back for many years, about nurses engaging in other activties when pt care and other work is finished. A new policy was just instituted that says that we will no longer be allowed any activities that are not pt focused. We are no longer allowed outside reading, internet surfing, needle work, ect. If pt care is completed, we are to stock and clean. We may read anything hospital oriented, such as, policy or procedure books, but nothing non hospital oriented. I certainly agree that pt care is THE top priority. I also agree that stocking and other side work should definitely be done before other activities, but we are told that we can be terminated if caught doing outside activties even on breaks and lunch. Does anywhere else have work policies like this? I am just curious.

yes , years ago when I was working in another bilding I could go on the net ,read books at my desk , sew , and so on . Now no internet at all (unless on your lunch and using your own phone ) no books, no talking with etch other (other then work I was written up for talking the other week) no walking around unless work releated (no walking over to a co-worker to talk) But at least I can do what I want on my lunch ?
I will that in some cases it was people missuseing things that lead to them being banded ,Like someone looked up porm and crashed the severs , a temp was caught online shopping ,people where doing other things other then work . So it could that just to many people where doing stuff other then what they where soposed to do and they got fed up.

The day my job tells me I cannot read a book on my break or have a conversation with someone is the day I keep going. That is just psychotic. I am sorry to hear that for you.

I used to work in customer service (a call center...that hardly ever got any calls). Sounds just like the rules there. We also had to actually raise our hand when we needed to use the bathroom and were not allowed to leave our desk until approved by the supervisor.

I never minded if my staff spent a little time on the web or whatever.
But if I walk into the station after hearing a call-light ring and ring, and your nose is in a magazine, on Facebook, or texting...watch out.

Good grief. Please say they didn't make you say "potty".

I'm sorry, but did you say even on breaks and lunch? They should have any say on what you do during your (non-paid) lunch/breaks, unless you're smoking in the hospital, using hospital resources, looking a Mediaography, etc. etc. etc...you get the picture?
IMHO
Yeah...I wouldn't be working there...that would make me feel like I'm going to go take the NCLEX everyday...
