This is my first post, although, I have been lurking on allnurses for quite a while:) The hospital I am employed with has been pretty laid back for many years, about nurses engaging in other activties when pt care and other work is finished. A new policy was just instituted that says that we will no longer be allowed any activities that are not pt focused. We are no longer allowed outside reading, internet surfing, needle work, ect. If pt care is completed, we are to stock and clean. We may read anything hospital oriented, such as, policy or procedure books, but nothing non hospital oriented. I certainly agree that pt care is THE top priority. I also agree that stocking and other side work should definitely be done before other activities, but we are told that we can be terminated if caught doing outside activties even on breaks and lunch. Does anywhere else have work policies like this? I am just curious.
