Wondering about RN job market in Cali

Published

Hello all...I am currently a second semester nursing student out of state. I am from SoCal and am looking to move back when I graduate in Spring/summer of 2010. Is it better to start looking for the new grad programs before I graduate?? Or is it better to get some experience where I live first and look for a job? OR is the market just bad period?? Any advise would be helpful..please tell me there is a light at the end of the tunnel:bugeyes:

California just had a budget and the Governor said, "Let's rebuild California!" I am sure the job market will be easier. Without a budget, the state cannot spend any $$$$, now they have one, so the freeze on hiring should be "history" for now! Of course, it will take a while to distribute the money!

I like the Obama's health care reform, because it increases the coverage for more Americans, so the censors will be up in the hospitals...subsequently, the hospitals will have to hire more nurses in the hospitals.

Yes, look for new grad programs before you graduate!! Do not wait! Your last semester you should apply so hopefully you can have some interviews set up while you are waiting to get your California license. If, when you graduate in 2010, the job market is still really tight, then try to get some experience where your school is and then move back.

People have still lost their jobs, the coverage is not going to be immediate.

There are still many more new grads than there are new grad positions available. If you can get a couple of years of experience before coming back to CA, then it would most definitely be in your favor.

And yes, the state now has a budget that has been signed, but have you actually read thru it and seen all of the cuts to health care? As well as the fact that Medicare is in process of being overhauled and that is where the majority of funding for hospitals comes from.

Anything happening is still not going to change the new grad situation in CA. Most definitely not.

A "cut" on health care industry is not avoidable! However, when there is a budget, the state will send the money to the County Hospitals and it will easy the job markets in the public hospitals...Such as LA County Medical Center which has a hiring freeze at this point. Also, if the state started spending money and this "budget" will create jobs; and subsequently, they will have health insurance! People avoid hospitals because they do not have health insurance! I remember some people would go to the hospital ER's if they experienced a slight chest pain....and they don't do this very often these days!

Economy is very complicated issue. Don't forget the hospitals were also getting the $$$ from the private health insurance companies as well.

When you said, "Anything happening is still not going to change the new grad situation in CA..." will have to re-examined! It might not change anything right away, but something is going to happen because of this budget.
