Why are so many people today shunning real medicine, vaccines etc for hoaxes and gimmicks like essential oils, weight loss powders, etc? Any ideas why so many are turning away from actual medicine?

Real question -- if something is labeled a placebo or the patient KNOWS it's a placebo...doesn't that make it, by definition, not a placebo?

EDIT: I'm wrong and can admit it:

I wonder if those patients know the definition of placebo. They might think placebo is some kind of drug. They do admit that more research is needed. Very interesting to know.

“Hey I’m giving you this atorvastatin. It’s basically a placebo but who am I kidding, you’re not going to stop stuffing down whoppers and honey buns and washing it down with an extra large diet soda, so you probably need all the help you can get.”

I wonder how that goes? “Here I have a placebo. It means it’s a sugar pill that doesn’t do anything but we’re going to charge you for it anyway. I know... you want some medicine that actually works. Well just hope really hard, and maybe you’ll get better!”

For someone who believes so strongly in science you've done remarkably little research into the power of the human mind.

How do you figure that?

The idea behind a placebo is that you believe it is something that will actually help you. Telling someone they’re taking a placebo kind of defeats the purpose....??‍♂️

Read the article I linked from Harvard. There's an ongoing study on "open-label placebos" with interesting results.

It also specifies that placebos are beneficial with self-reported symptoms like nausea, headache, or pain. Or psychiatric symptoms, as described in this study:

When I have a splitting headache lasting for hours I'm always amazed at how instantly it is relieved with enteric-coated ibuprofen. Before there is any way the enteric coating could have dissolved. I'm sure it is the placebo effect, but I'll take it.

On the old westerns, you see how they did it when modern stuff (vax, abx) was not even heard of yet.

Rest, rest, and more rest. Time. I guess you either pulled through or you didn't.

I believe there is some merit in many approaches, not just Western medicine.

Let's be respectful of everyone's views, even if you happen not to subscribe to them.

As for modern medicine - some doctors are telling their clerks to not let sick people have appointments if the clerks think you have the flu. They will give you Tamiflu and ASSume that what you have is viral. How's that for some prime baloney?

Sorry, but there are some "views" that are not worthy of respect. Views which completely ignore facts and science and can result in serious harm to individuals and society at large are not going to be given any respect by me.

No.. I have half of a brain so I know that listerine in your nose doesn’t protect your mouth...

Im still deciding on nursing vs medical.

I’d love being a doctor but it takes so much school. And I’m already 23 so I’d be OLD by the time I got done. At least like 34.

How old will you be in 11 years if you DON'T go to medical school?

Point being, where would you really like to be in 11 years? A nurse or a doctor? Will you be happy being a nurse, or after those years pass, will you think to yourself "I'd be a doctor now if I hadn't given up on my true passion. Damn it."

Good luck with whatever you decide! Both are worthy professions for those that actually have a passion for them.

I will concede your point on that as I did not read every article - I think you are confusing me with the OP as I have been in nursing for a very long time. My point by that post is that the op cited one article from a commercial cosmetics company as proof of his/her claim without even looking to google scholar or other more reputable databases.

Hppy

Ok, but if you are going to link articles to bolster your point, it seems that you should have read them. JMO.

My daddy always asks them how their imaginary friends are doing and it makes me mad!

While I don't believe all beliefs are worthy of respect, that doesn't make it okay to actively show disrespect to someone for their beliefs. You can still show respect to the human being.

Sorry, but your "daddy" sounds like a jerk.

Yeah... that’s daddy... I always ask him to at least wait until they leave.

The emergence of Witchcraft in a country that does not provide universal healthcare is not amazing. Potions and poultices are affordable and available, opposed to science which is dependent on how many hours you work for an employer who offers health insurance.

p.s.: Witches don't have deductibles either.
