Winter 2011 GN positions/interviews in Houston, TX

U.S.A. Texas

Hi, just wanted to start a trend about where you applied, call backs, interviews and who all got hired.

Would love to hear your stories and anything else to help other graduating nurses.

I definitely agree about not being picky. I am willing to work any setting and any specialty.. Med surg, long term care, nights, far out in suburbs etc. i just want the experience and i know eventually i will get to my goal of ICU. I understand the preference for BSN which is why I am already enrolled for an Rn-BSN to start in january. It will happen for each person. I think God has a plan for everyone and what is meant to be will be.

TheguyRN: I am planning to do the same and go talk to managers on the floors , but i was going to wait until I actually have my license.. Hopefully mid January. What did you say to the managers when you talked to them and what was their response? Positive/negative?

Prettyladie: When you call the recruiters, what do you say? (I mostly get voicemail when I call but when i do talk to them i dont seem to get much from them)

Ok, I'm discouraged, I graduated with my accelerated BSN in Indiana in August, and have since moved to Houston and applied to every GN program I could find and have heard nothing. My nursing GPA was a 3.9, I worked as a student nurse in the OR and volunteered in the ER and passed the NCLEX in 75 questions. I'm wondering if being an outsider is working against me (we moved here without knowing a soul), as well as the fact that it has been a few months since I graduated (my daughter was born one month after my graduation, so I have a good reason!). Any advice? I'm happy to work anywhere (school, nursing home, etc) any shift! Good luck to the rest of you!

Cindyrella, I am sorry for the late response...I took a breather from allnurses/job search because I was getting overwhelmed and discourage. I hope your interview went well.

NewHoustonRN, I understand exactly where you are coming from...I graduate in August with a BSN degree from TN. I moved to Houston the day after graduation. I have applied to just about everywhere and even went to local job fairs. Its really getting frustrating but I try to remain hopeful and keep the FAITH.

Specializes in ICU.

Shesarainbow - I pretty much explained that I was graduating soon and I was looking for a job in the unit because i've always wanted to work here.. Some places were great about it and others not so much. One Manager called me back 4 days later and set me up for a interview even before intern positions were available... (Also please do this even before your license as most intern positions are decided before you even graduate)

NewHoustonRN and Ashlee - I would go into the hospital and talk to the recruiter or even managers to the unit. On paper everyone looks the same. Showing your face and your attitude helps. I also agree going to school out of state does not really help your chances :-( sorry

Cindyrella, sorry to bother you. Any new update from MD yet?

Zirine sa, do you have any new update from MD as well?

Did anyone else apply to MD? What update do you have to share.

Ahhh I got a job at MD Anderson!! OMG I feel so lucky and blessed to be picked to work in such a amazing hospital! The nurse recruiter called me at 5pm today (I was anxious the whole day today, hoping to hear from them) and the recruiter informed me that they were going forward with offering me at position! OMG I cried out of happiness! I accepted the position right away b/c MDA was my #1 choice. I just wanted to share the GREAT NEWS! THANK YOU GOD!

PS I was hired onto the GU floor and I interviewed on October 28 and the residency starts December 12th!

:redpinkhe:w00t:

I got the job! Im sooooooooo ecstatic!!! everything you said goes for me as well except for unit! Aaaaah speechless! Im coming from out of state. I have a week to pack! :yeah:

Congrats you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cindyrella- do you know if MDA is still having the GN program that starts in February as well? I know originally it was one internship starting in Nov and one starting in Feb for Dec graduates.

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!

Zirine_sa - Congrats! What unit will you be on? PM me if you want :)

2011GradRN - The residency I applied for was originally stated to start Nov. 28 but they pushed it back since HR and the managers were running behind on reviewing all the applicants. So now we are starting Dec. 12. I'm haven't heard any GN residency that starts in February.

I got a call from Methodist Willowbrook on the 23rd, offering me a GN position for their med-surg unit starting on Jan. 30. I hadn't really applied, I was asked by the nursing director of med-surg while I was doing clinicals there this semster to call HR and from there on I got an interview on Nov. 14th. I graduate Dec. 15th with an ADN but already have a previous bachelor's degree. I am so excited! What a load off!
