Happy New Year!
I let a few weeks go by due to the upcoming holidays and busy work schedule...so much has happened that I have to start somewhere!
As I have been keeping you all up to date about my newly formed union and it's new contract that starts today, I was nominated for several board positions; I chose the one that I had the most nominations for, campaigned and won a position! This is new territory for me-being involved in improving workplace conditions and healthcare worker activism. I was very humbled that I was nominated in the first place.
Amongst holiday parties, overtime, and wrapping gifts, I started learning the position that I will eventually represent, as well continue to help clarify what we as employees under a new contract need to look out for, make decisions on, and make sure management is held accountable; there is an official shortage of nurses at my job, making overtime very lucrative, along with issues related to less beds, and potential ED overcrowding.
The bright spot is there are new hires in our department that are enthusiastic and are receptive to learning; I will have a chance to teach my project again to the new hires, along with learning some new skills myself to make me marketable in the future and give me a side specialty ; my personal goals need to flourish this year while continuing to hone my main specialty skills.
I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays!
What have YOU learned this week?

Congrats Ladyfree28! After all the hard work you put in, it nust be gratifying to see some of it finally paying off!
This week, I learned about prioritizing which needs of patients come first when you have an ED filled to the maximum capacity. Holiday weeks are the worst. I am still figuring it out, and I am pretty sure a couple of my patients were peeved with me as they did not get pain medication in a timely manner but I am still learning the ropes and most importantly, my patients remained stable.

Yes, congrats again! You deserve it!!
Glad I have made it through the holidays, which means I'm *that* much closer to the end of my pregnancy. It turns out my husband doesn't just have a pinched sciatic nerve, he has a bulging disc. Now it makes more sense why he is in so much pain. But he is walking & manuvering better & has gone back to work.
I got my (nursing) license reinstated after letting it lapse. I can honestly say that it was a pain to go through & I will never let it lapse again!
Oh also when my husband went to the doctor they did a full check up on him. He has high blood sugar, pressure & cholesterol. He also may have an issue with his liver, additional tests are needed. I'm worried as hell whereas he doesn't seem to be bothered.
I hope everyone had a great holiday season & a great start to the New Year!
When I found out I was pregnant I was happy to know that my last trimester would be in the winter.
But what is this?!? It's 80 degrees & it's January!!! To say I sweat a lot today is an understatement! Winter where are you????

I accidentally discovered, and therefore learned this week that Bloody Mary mix (sans vodka) can be used as oral rehydration solution if you got several people with severe stomach flu 30.000 feet above the Atlantic.
Also, it was fun to run the floor, so to say, with a British doctor. Apparently, I was the first US nurse he ever encountered and he was clearly impressed :)
I got the results of my renal ultrasound. Nothing remarkable. Last pregnancy I had hydronephrosis. Now there is nothing wrong with my kidneys *or* bladder. I have known this whole time it was my gallbladder. Anytime I eat something spicy, fatty or dairy I get super sick. It makes *no* sense that it would be my kidneys.
I hope I can convince my OBGYN to do an ultrasound on my gallbladder. Wish me luck when I go to my OBGYN this Friday.
I feel like I'm posting so much. I had a major gallbladder attack last night (I had been sick since Saturday). After suffering all night I called my OBGYN, saw him & he admitted me. We will see what happens.

I'm sorry you're feeling so unwell, but hopefully being inpatient will facilitate proper testing & treatment.
I hope so. I had an ultrasound done & guess what they found? Gallstones. At least I'm on the right path now.
