Will prescribed Phentermine keep me from being hired?

Published

I was recently offered a job in an amazing facility that I have been trying to get hired at for the last year. I have a current prescription for phentermine through my doctor. I am supposed to take it every day but I only take it once in a while. I was told that as long as it was prescribed and I gave a copy of the prescription to the collection facility at the time of testing it would be fine. The testing site refused to take the copy of the script and said that I would be contacted if they needed it. It didn't sound right to me so I called back the next day to confirm that was correct that they didn't need a copy up front. Again, they said I would be contacted if they needed it. I'm really worried about this now. Has anyone ever had this situation?

Why would phentermine pose an obstacle to being hired? I guess I don't understand the reason for your concern. Phentermine may be considered a potential risk for anesthesia, but not for employment.

I'm not surprised that the testing site wasn't interested in your script. I doubt that any employer tests for phentermine.

I am curious about the answer too, I just started taking phetermine 3 days ago and had 2 interviews (hoping an offer follows!). I have searched extensively on the internet and some sites say it shows up as false positive for amphetamines and others say it doesn't show up at all.

I don't understand why the testing site would refuse to take a copy of the script, did they mark down somewhere that you presented it? I think they would rather just take it then have to chase down the paper trail?

Your test mine come back positive. But as long as it's a RX for you by a MD and you can prove this you honestly should be ok.

If positive a MRO might call you and speak to you about what RX's you are taking. This is when you would tell about your RX.

I honestly wouldn't sweat it.

Thanks. I feel a lot better about it now. I would hate to come this far and finally get offered the job and screw it up like that. :-)

Because it is not the job of the testing site to get involved in ones scripts. That is why the do not care about what medications you are taking. They only care that they have the correct person pee'ing in the cup. The MRO's, job is to call you if the test comes back positive. The MRO will be the one who clears the matter up by finding out what medications you are taking or not.

The Hope this helps

It should be ok. Just keep a positive outlook on everything. If you get a call from the MRO, dont panic. Give them all the info on the drug including ordering MD.

Wishing you the best of luck.

Medical review officer?

I used to take prescribed phentermine and I never had a problem with getting hired. I submitted my RX and that was it.

What's a MRO?

Yes, you will test positive for amphetamines. If you have an RX, you will be okay. They can also send your urine for additional testing to confirm that it is phentermine in your urine and not something else.
