Hello everyone, ive spent roughly the last 2-3 hours just browsing these boards. This place looks really great and theres so much information. Anyways im seriously considering a career as an RN. Im in my 1st year of community college and was originally going to do my math/science. My plan is to spend next year getting close to all my prereq's out of the way. The only thing they will look at is what I did this year and first semester of the fall. I plan on taking A+P and microbiology in the fall. First sememter i got a 3.0 and this semseter im looking at maybe a 3.3-4 Im really nevous I wont get accepted. My school gets about 280 applicants and only takes 60. not really sure where im going with this except a little guidance. Thanks.

Congrats---I agree nursing school is competitive that is true. Sched a time to meet with your adviser to put together the best academic plan for you. Some schools require certain pre-reqs before you begin your nursing courses, and some of those pre-reqs hold more weight than others. Example Pharmacology, vs Patho. But every school is different.
Best of luck---it is a long road but once your done you will feel so proud.

Don't cut yourself short on this. I'm waiting to get in at my school and I'm worried too. However, if they have an LPN program and an RN program, you can always apply to both the LPN and the RN program. If you don't get into the RN program then you can usually apply to go from the LPN to the RN program and that will narrow the applicant field. Also, if there are other schools in the area that you can apply to, it will probably widen your chances of getting in to at least 1 of the schools.
I'm of the opinion, if I don't get in the first time, I will keep applying. In the meantime, I am getting ready to start a CNA course so that I can actually be in the medical field while I wait.
Good Luck and if you don't get in, keep trying!

I went through those same feelings. It seemed like everyone at my cc was a nursing major, 500 applied and only 86 were admitted. I started slacking off on school work thinking I wouldn't get in. Then one day SUPRISE I got my acceptance letter!!! That was the good news, the bad news was I had to kick it into high gear for the rest of the semester. So just stay positive and focused. GOOD LUCK:mad:!!!!
Thanks for the words of encouragement. Ive talked to an advisor already. From what ive been told they weigh heavily on GPA and how well you did in the prerequisites. Im hoping if I get an A in anatomy before I apply that will look god on top of an ok GPA. How long does the CNA courses take to complete?

applying to nursing school can be a drag. but, it is worth it. i felt the same way. i was going to apply to my school which was a very very large university. i spent 3 years doing my prereq. and the nursing program at that current school was 3 years also. so, i decided to apply to other schools and i got into another program which still offered a bsn ; and the program was only 2 years. what i am saying is dont let things discourage you. if this is what you want to do, make it happen. it might not happen the way you planned, but it will happen. good luck!!!!

The schools in my area are similar. They are around 1000 applicants for 40 slots. This was my third year applying to school, during the last three years I completed all pre-reqs, earned two associate degrees and became a CNA. This year I finally got accepted to a cc, that had close to 1100 applicats and they had 100 spots. So if you really want it, keep with the pre-reqs and apply to as many schools as you can
Is taking Micro and A+P at the same time a bad idea? ive heard they are the 2 hardest courses. Ive been reading other thread about people with 3.7's worried about not getting in...:uhoh21:
I took them at the same time, both classes are a lot of work, I did better in Micro then A&P.

I would recomend not taking A&P w/ micro if you can help it. Both are very hard. It best to take a hard class with an easy class if you can manage to work that out. Also meet with a Nursing program advisor (not a regualr school one) and discuss what the best applicants look like and what you can do to stand out. I know a lot of programs like CNA work or volunteer work. Also apply everywhere. Chances are you will not get into the school of your choices, you yourself stated the odds. So maximizes your chances with multiple schools. Apply to LPN programs as well as you can do a bridge program after and be an RN in shorter amount of time if you had only applied to RN programs only. It took me 3 years of applying and waiting to get into nursing school and my GPA was 3.6 with 2 years of work as a CNA. Good luck to you, stick with it cause it will happen

I would discourage against taking A&P and micro together unless you are an exceptional student. You mentioned that you got a 3.0 in a previous semester and are hoping for a 3.3 in the current semester. In my humble opinion it would look better to have an "A" in A&P only than to have a B in both classes.
Of course, each program looks at different things...maybe they are mostly concerned that you have all the pre-reqs done and aren't so concerned about grades, but most of the programs around here are VERY concerned with GPA, especially science GPA or "core" GPA. I fear that if you are in a rush to get all the classes done so you can apply sooner, you may end up with a bunch of "B"s and have a difficult time ever getting in. But if you take your time and take the hard classes alone or with other easy classes you'll have a great chance of getting in....but it might be 1 year later than your ideal...IMO if this is truly the career you want, better to have a sure thing a year later than mediocre chances for years and years to come.
I've seen people have to RE-TAKE the core classes one at a time because they were in a rush the first time around and got Bs and Cs.
Is it possible for you to take the micro over the summer and then just take the A&P in the fall? That way you could hopefully get As in both and have both of them counted towards next year's app. Just a thougt. Good luck to you in your studies!:)

I think A&P was a 5 credit hour class and micro was a 4 credit hour class. They would be do-able together, but a LOT of studying and lab time. If you have a job and/or a family, I wouldn't do it. If you feel confident as a B student when studying to your full ability, take the heavy classes one at a time with one or two fluff classes. I would also recommend micro as a summer class, if your school offers it.
Our program focused a great deal of attention on your grades from your prerequisites....more so than any other application factor.
Best of luck to you. :)
