Will filing bankruptcy make it hard to get a job as a nurse?

I am considering filing bankruptcy due to credit card and medical bill debt. I am not yet a nurse but I was curious if I was too file would it be an issue when I go to get a job as a nurse. I know most employers these days have you sign paperwork allowing them to look at your credit history among other things. I am worried because I know the job market is already hard and I do't want to make it harder for myself but filing for bankruptcy would lift a huge weight off my shoulders. Thanks in advance for any advice.

P.s. Before any of you ********** say anything (I know you are out there), I have a very valid reason for being in this debt and not be able to pay these bills.

Hi DizzyLizzy,

Just curious... you mention that the job market sucks where you are. Where is that?

Western NY.

Thanks for this thread. I was wondering the same thing as I am filing bankruptcy this week d/t divorce and huge credit card bills from several years ago after moving and not being able to find a job for months. I am in nursing school now but working as an LPN. My credit score last year was 809 now probably in the low 500s. Can't wait to put this all behind me and start fresh.

Touche, 2ndwind. I don't live in the US, but I know the general job market is still suffering there. I guess I was referring specifically to the nursing job market, which, as I understand it (I'm not yet a nurse, but working on it), is typically a low-supply, high-demand industry.

In answer to DizzyLizzyNurse I practice in the state of missouri, specifically the metropolitan st louis market. Many hospitals and tons of nursing homes, rehab and specialty hospitals, etc. Metro st. louis market includes both city and county and we have large populations in north, south, and west county so lots of work in different settings. Seems like all the hospitals are always hiring:nurse:

Thank you for this post it has really been helpful to me.

Do you have to tell them? If not, don't. It isnt there business. I know I have heard about some employers going to start or are doing credit checks more now but I did not know it was that common/already started happening. Mine has never been checked or asked about.

I know this is an old post, but I found it truly helpful in discussing the pros and cons of bankruptcy and how it can potentially affect getting a job.

I had a foreclosure and chapter 7 bankruptcy during a very rough time where my husband was very ill. Ive never had an issue with a job.
