Will it ever get better out there?

Nurses General Nursing

I am still getting my prerequisites for a BSN degree. Im not going to attend nursing school till my youngest starts kinder.

Well my question is this. I will be graduating from nursing school in spring of 2018 (that is the plan). That is about 4 1/2 years from now. Wow, that sounds so far away. Will the job market improve for RN's by that time? I really can't rely on government projection, I just don't trust them. What do y'all see for the future for us aspiring RN's when it comes to jobs?

I just mentioned Christmas bc someone said I was mad. I had a wonderful day and the responses were not going to make me mad.

I give up. Lesson learned. Don't ever mention government even in passing and don't respond to others that don't like a sentence from my post. It just snow balls. Got it.

I think it depends on the area you live. My college program lets about 40 people split off during the last year and go full time during the summer so they can graduate in December instead of May. I know about half of those students from my clinicals. Without exception, everyone I talked to had a job offer before graduation, or a job offer within a few days of pinning. My program in general advertises a very high rate of new grads having job offers before graduation as part of its appeal. I'm not even looking yet since I don't finish until May, but I've already been offered a job by one place.

In my area, all 6 hospitals are advertising new grad positions. One is a magnet hospital, and they just request that new grads with a diploma or ASN start a BSN program within 5 years. They even have an employee program that will pay for you to do it. So it really comes down to the area you live.

I do live in a city that has over a million people and there are three BSN and four ASN programmes here. I do see that the hospitals have new grad internships, although the internships are not in great number.

Thanks for the input.

friendlyjane said I really don't know why this is becoming about government.

Because you brought up "the government" in a few woefully uninformed comments. I called you on it (as will happen on a discussion board) and you went off on some other tangents. That's ok though.

I just asked a question and mentioned the government once about how their info just does not jive with the real world in nursing and jobs.

I love this part: Could you quote some of this "bad government info" please?

Why are you being so up tight?

Because I strongly suspect your comments and criticisms of "government" as a general entity are uninformed and based in ideology rather than fact. I found this ironic since you are pursuing an education that could not happen without government funding of public universities, nursing licensure that cannot happen without government oversight, and a career in which government provides a significant source of funding.

If not please stop going on and on about stupid government.

Then please stop asking me why I am so "uptight" on an internet discussion board that would not exist without research began by the "stupid government."

Thanks!

I really mentioned it in passing in my OP. Please just let it be now, ok. Please. I already admitted I used one word wrong that made my explanation to my original post too encompassing. Still more post about it. I really just want it to stop. Ok. Do I need to say uncle now? Uncle. There, you made your point.

Just one more thought - I am not trying to be nasty - but you talk about your small children. You said if you can't find a job you maybe could commute 1 hour? There are nurses who are having to relocate hundreds of miles away to get a job and it is the "nature of the beast" that nursing jobs don't always provide very family friendly schedules. Understandably relocating is not an option for some. You really should try to research your local job market. Keep in mind hospital websites are not always accurate. Perhaps try to get information from recent graduates of the local nursing schools.

I have a friend who just graduated with a BSN last weekend and a family member will be graduating in March with an ASN. That will let me gauge somewhat how it is in my area.

Now about relocating, I don't think I could go any further then an hour from my current residents. My hubby has his job here and that can't be changed anytime soon.

Thanks for the post. :-)

FriendlyJane,

Sorry about the negativity on your thread. I do not not understand the responses on AN sometimes. There's a lot of condescending and patronizing responses here.

I am a new nurse, myself. I had a job within 2 weeks of passing the boards.

I also have 3 children and school and work can be a challenge but it an be done!

Good luck !

It turns out the government (and many other sources) are not good at predicting the future of employment.
