Wilkes University BSN-MSN PMHNP / Spring 2021

Updated:   Published

Hello future class!

I got accepted into Spring 2021 at Wilkes University (BSN-MSN PMHNP): Anyone starting with me?

Anyone doing bedside or thinking of leaving bedside while going to school? Are you going to work FT/PT/PRN?  What specialty are you working?

I am looking for other options besides bedside- I am absolutely physically/mentally drained ?

So excited to begin ?

No I haven’t heard of that one. I’ve searched the web countless times and it amazes me that there are still schools out there that I have not heard of. I will definitely Google it and look into it now that you mentioned  it. I don’t know if they have online programs though.

I feel the same way.  I find out about new schools monthly it seems. Spring Arbor is a contender for me but Wilkes tuition and clinical placement is what keeps me coming back.  I think the last thing I need to compare is the length of the programs.

By the way, to everyone who is questioning whether or not will truly does help with clinical placement, I am looking on their webpage under “frequently asked questions about clinical placement service” and here’s some of what it says on the screen.

There’s one section that says “ how does the clinical placement process work?“ And there is an answer below that says the clinical placement team will collaborate with you to secure quality placement sites and preceptors. In addition to completing a placement intake form, he will be responsible for completing all of your clinical clearance requirements.

Then there is a next session that says “what value with the clinical placement team provide?” And the answer below it says “the clinical placement team identifies and secures quality placement sites within your local community. This process allows you to focus on the coursework and core competencies that will direct your placement experience. As an active participant in the placement process, providing referrals from your local community increases your chances of securing quality sites and preceptors.”

so this makes me feel pretty confident that Wilkes is the way to go if a clinical placement guarantee is what you’re looking for. And that is definitely what I’m looking for.

I am going through my own horror story right now. Because I am currently enrolled at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck New Jersey in Psychiatric Mental Health NP program. I was supposed to start my clinicals this coming January 2021. But they left it all up to the students to find preceptors and partly because of the pandemic I have not been able to find any. And so they’re telling us we will have to wait a year to try again. The pediatric psych rotation has to be the first one. So if you don’t find a pediatric psych preceptor for January they will not be flexible by at least allowing you to do one of the other clinicals first. So those of us who were unable to secure a pediatric psych preceptor for January is forced to sit out a whole year and try again for next year January 2022. Now why would I do that? When I have no guarantee that I won’t find myself in the same situation a year from now. So that is why I am transferring out. Word to the wise— do not go to any of these NP programs that specifically say they will not lift a finger to help you find a preceptor. I’ve already earned 15 credits from five courses that I’ve taken since last September plus I’m enrolled in another 7 credits right now. When I transfer to another school like Wilkes they only accept 9 credits. So just think of all the money and time that I’ve wasted. I don’t want anyone else to make that mistake.

I'm so sorry for what you are going through.  I can't imagine the frustration you must feel.  I appreciate you sharing your story.  It is a reminder of how important it is to have guaranteed placement.  I hope your transition over goes well.  Please keep us all updated.

For those recently accepted, how is Wilkes handling the "two residency Visits" mentioned on their website?

They plan to handle it on a semester by semester basis. According to my zoom meeting, they will be doing this upcoming semester’s school meeting remotely.
