wierd/scary craigslist job

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I came across a RN job on craigslist one day and sent my tweeked generic coverletter + resume as usual. The ad didn't say anything about new grads, experience or the company. didn't think much of it just another job ad. Few weeks later I get an email telling me i got passed the HR and now im scheduled for an interview..

Here's where the weird begins..

the email doesn't say the company name or give me a contact phone number.. OK...The address goes to a suite BUT the company isn't listed... I can't google ANYTHING about this address or suite# AND the email domain is a generic gmail...

OK WEIRD but ill go to the interview...

found the place ok, nice area, suite is listed as a PRIVATE COMPANY... no name?! really hmmm... went inside and saw legit looking employees and 1 pt walked in...was lead to a employee lounge to wait my turn... theres nothing in here, went to the managers "office" and theres no furniture just 2 chairs and bedside table... interviewed for 5 min and got a 2nd interview...

2nd interview email has the same wierdness new address BUT OK ill go. I enter the suite... and there are NO employees in sight just 2 interviewees... so i peak my head behind the reception desk to try to find ANYTHING with a company name on it... NOTHING. theres no patients at this facility... doesn't even look like its been used/brand new. NO PAPERWORK NOTHING. this suite is also listed as PRIVATE... interview was 5 min... told i got a 3rd interview but haven't heard from them since... the manager's email doesn't work... and the generic gmail emailer doesn't respond...

WHAT SCARED ME THE MOST was not that i couldn't find a company name but that they asked for training over 500 miles away near the border... man i watch too many movies but HEY i might've got traffic-ed!! I wonder what happened to the other new grads? This company COULD BE LEGIT just starting or something but i dunno.

SCARY!!!

Craigslist is for offing your old nasty couch onto other people, and for finding skeezy one-nighters, not for finding a nice permanent job.... everyone on the internet should know that by now. ;)

I got my current job through an ad on Craigslist.

Just sayin'

I do agree about being cautious!

What I can't figure out is why the OP, after getting red flags from the get go, proceeded to go to not only one, but two interviews at this sketchy place and didn't ask any questions about the company, patient population, etc.

I wondered this myself I have to admit.

us ranked on human trafficking report for first time

june 15, 2010

the united states was ranked for the first time in the 10th annual trafficking in persons (tip) report documenting human trafficking and modern slavery, released on monday by the department of state. the report found that in america men, women, and children were subject to trafficking for “forced labor, debt bondage, and forced prostitution.” http://www.humantrafficking.org/updates/875

it's sad but true: here in this country, people are being bought, sold, and smuggled like modern-day slaves.

we’re working hard to stop human trafficking—not only because of the personal and psychological toll it takes on society, but also because it facilitates the illegal movement of immigrants across borders and provides a ready source of income for organized crime groups and even terrorists. http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/investigate/civilrights/human_trafficking

call the police.....if they are legit they won't mind and will probably hire you for ethics, intellegence and fortitude.....if they are not legit you may save a life besides yours:hug:.....please be safe!:redbeathe

Not always; I've found three jobs (reputable) on Craigslist.

And I am sure they had a business address and could be googled. This whole story from start to finish, if not a joke, scares me to death for the OP.....and any other innocent nurses desperate for a job. Crime is a situation of opportunity......if the opportunity arises, they seize it.....and cross the boarder so their victims can't be found.

Maybe she went to the 3rd interview :uhoh21:

I'm with you esme! Oh hell to the no ! Not safe.

There are legit jobs on Craigslist and scammers, too! I've gotten e-mails from such "companies" through the Careerbuilder site. The English syntax is off. There is no company name there, but "they reviewed my resume and think I'd be right for the job" uh-huh --What job?

We have an excellent compensation package blah blah blah . . . no.

But I'm curious about what they asked you during the interview? I'd love to be proven wrong, though! (to bring down my cynicism level a notch or two).

Yes, that's the weird, scary part. Always research companies before going on interviews -- even if it is a completely legit sounding company that your best friend and sister have worked at for 20 years.

Always do your homework, not just so you don't up in a sex trafficking ring, but also, so that if it is a place you work, you actually sound like you know what you're talking in the interview.

The part about no information about the job / having to train far away for said mystery job should tell you everything you need to know. Stay away, OP!

As to the interviews in empty offices, I can clear that one up: they're rentals. You can rent an office or conference room in an hourly, daily, weekly or monthly basis with the plethora of commercial space available nowadays. The name of the org on the directory is usually generic. If you see any staff, they're only there to answer the phone, check in renters, and open offices for use. The only person working for the company you interviewed with is probably the one you met.

Like a few others, I've found a (legit) job or two on craigslist but would be wary until confirming the org / nature of the job.

cl does get a bad rap, and in many cases, for good reason. i was fortunate enough to find two legitimate rentals (two different places i lived in) through cl, but not without countless requests for my personal info to be sent to other countries (the owner of the house was sub-leasing and on important business in zimbabwe  ). usually for apartments and rentals, there is no phone #. you reply via the cl mail address, and they immediately ask you to fill out a credit report. when you reply by asking "can you tell me where the apt is, and when it will be available" you get the same "form" e-mail, asking for your credit report. yeah, right!! there was one that showed a picture of a house in my neighborhood, and i knew where the house was (on a major road). i also knew it, because it was a doctor's office! weird...

my husband is job-hunting. he received a reply from "game stop", basically hiring him. no details about which store, no application was filled out, no interview request. but, a request for a backgound check (to be done online). he replied by asking a few legitimate questions (just to see if they'd answer), and he never heard from them again.

i looked up craigslist scams, and it basically matched the things they said to look out for, the only difference was they had a company name. to me, this makes it more confusing.

why did the op bite? my guess (and not an insult); she was desperate. more nicely put, she was happy that someone was interested in her.
