Wierd Question.

Published

Hi i know this is going to be a wierd question.

I am a male asian and am looking to go into the nursing field.

My parents heads are back in the 50's and once i told them that i wanted to do nursing, all hell broke out at home.

My parents keep thinking that there are only female nurses and no male nurses. I told them that they are wrong and things have changed. Its more diverse these days.

True there still are more females than males but i'm sure its going to be 50/50 some time in the near future.

Anyway my questions are:

1) How many asians do you know that are nurses, Total?

2) How many Female asians do you know that are nurses?

3) How many Male asians do you know that are nurses?

4) What state are you from?

5) What nationality were they? (chinese, japanese, koren, Indian, Tai, vietnamese, etc)

If you have seen none. I guess reply none ;)

Well thats basically all the questions that i can think of.

Thanks

I was thinking of doing a poll but i can't think of what to make up as the answers.

Oh well. :p

Thanks.

When i stated Asian i guess i should have stated "chinese, japanese, and koren"

But so far reading from this BB it seems that most the asians that are nurses are Filipino.

Oh yea and if you could please state that city and state you live at, that would help me get a better picture.

I'm from New York and am chinese

I live in Philadelphia and I work with two Asian women, Korean I think. I have worked with countless Fillipino RNs.

You are in a tough place my friend and I wish you all the luck in the world!

Filipino, West Palm Beach, Florida. The two male Asian nurses I worked with in San Francisco, California are of Chinese and Burmese descent.

I just remembered that right now, I work with two male nurse anesthetists. One is Thai, the other is Filipino

I've worked with dozens of Asian nurses - Filipino, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Japanese - but only 5 or 6 of them have been male.

In New York you should not worry about what your background is. This is the most diverse place there could be. If it's your dream/goal, then GO FOR IT!!!!!

For the closed minded - to hell with them!

Thanks everyone for replying to this thread and letting me know that there are some asians out there working.

Even though I don't have my parents support i will be trying to get into this field.

I have worked with several asian , filipino nurses and none of them were males. That does not mean to say that I have not worked with male nurses. They are no different than female nurses in that there are good ones and not so good ones. GO FOR IT!! I live in Rhode Island.

humm i wonder why there are more filipino nurses than other asian nurses out there?

Is there anyone else out there that could please add to the pool?

Even if you have worked with none or gone to school with none please reply none.

Also please state where you live.

Thanks

I live in Louisiana. In nursing school, our class of approximately 100 people had about 5 or 6 Asian (Vietnamese, I believe) males and 3-5 Asian females. At the facility I work at, I have only seen a handful of Asian nurses- perhaps about 10 or 15, mostly Filipino (at least half of them), all female. At our sister hospital, which is larger and down the street, there are another handful (5-8?) of Asian males who all work in either the ER or ICU as well as a few Filipino nurses of both genders. My best friend from high school was valedictorian of her class (we were originally in the same grade but she skipped a year ahead) and wanted to be a nurse way before I ever considered it. I have lost touch with her for the most part (it's been 8 years since I graduated) but I went to dinner with her about two years ago when she graduated from Tulane. She said that she'd felt so much pressure from her father to succeed that she felt obligated to go to medical school, where at least she would be helping people get well (though she felt that there was a fundamental difference between nurses and physicians, which was what had drawn her to nursing in the first place). I know she always felt pressured to go to the top, no matter what arena of life it was in, by her family. Perhaps that is one reason why Asian people in general may seem to be underrepresented in nursing...? I hope for you that you choose a path that is fulfilling to *you*. Nursing is no small career, and the options are almost boundless. It is fulfilling for me in a way that no other "job" could possibly be. Follow your heart. Your parents love you and ultimately, that is all that really matters. Life is too short for us to be held back by things like this, I think. Good luck! :>)

Whoops...forgot to say that my friend from high school was Korean. :>) Sorry.

Want to see if i can get any more responses so bump :)

Why are they so against it? Is it considered a female task or is it a different issue? I'm curious. I work in the chicago metro area and we have lots of Filipinos, male and female. Lots of male nurses--white, African, African-American, Filipino. I's say roughly that we have 2 male nurses for every 5 females. I enjoy working with make nurses, maybe even more than female...they seem to have a take on life that is positive and humorous and healthy. go for it!
