Why are some staff nurses such HATERS!

They walk around grumbling all day about you getting paid more than them. They think you should work harder because you are making a few more dollars. As if they can't work agency too!

Some nurses are so sad!

Then they shouldn't ask how much we are being paid.

I am extremely stressed by the tension they create however i dont add fuel to the flames.

I chill out and make the best of my day.

By the way I am so happy this has happened to me. It was a hard lesson learned. Next time I know when anyone ask me questions about myself to be very vague or just not answer at all.

I guess i was nieve to think they cared about who i was. When i ask peole questions about themselves, it is just to get to know them. I answered their questions now they are using it against me.

It is true, they do, and I am sure the nurses are grateful for any help they receive. But the already stressed nurses don't need to have thrown in their faces how the agency nurse is making more money an hour for the same job and how the agency nurse doesn't need the hospital the hospital needs the agency nurse....We're all in this together, for patient care...if we can't play nice with each other, that will be reflected in our patient care...

Do you as an agency nurse really get paid that much more - once you take away the no holiday pay thing I would imagine it would be fairly close. A bit like saying I will pay you 1,000 an hour - but you can only work one hour a week and have to be available as free support for the rest of the week.... my point is an hourly rate says very little about what you are actually earning.

You are absolutely right two wrongs don't make a right.

But i do not think i am wrong for venting here how i feel about the terrible things my colleagues are doing to me.

At work, I just grin and bear it! When they give me the sickest, heaviest(500lbs+), most confused patients...it is just unfair. I run around all day like a chicken without a head while they sit on the internet and socialize. Then the icing on the cake is when they tell me i have to admit another patient.

In addition to giving me the worst assignemnt they also grumble all day about how much money i make and how rich i am. If i was so rich i definitely will not be working my a#@ off there and putting up with their b@# s%$#@!

They don't realize they have alot that i don't have: paid vacation, sick time, job security, pension, excellent benfits, etc.

I never and i repeat never give them the satisfaction of knowing that i am annoyed my their snyde comments and unfair assignments. I smile the entire day, joke with them, and just play along. Because at the end of the day as i said before they are not signing my paycheck.

So, yes these are sad nurses.

When i was staff i embraced the agency and travel nurses because i wanted them to come back. I thankful for the supplemental staff.

As far as these nurses not wanting to leave their job because of seniority. That is not my problem. That is their personal problem and should not be taken out on others.

My philosophy in life is to make myself and my family happy. So if i am unhappy at a job, I leave. There is no reason for me to stick around and feel abused and unappeciated.

So you are probably thinking that "some people don't like change". I don't like change, however it is part of life. If you cannot adjust to change then you are in trouble.

So the answer is NO-NO-NO...I cannot empathize with these nurses.

There is no ligitimate reason for them to be cruel.

You contridicted yourself in your first few paragraphs, you paint such how bad it is to be an agency nurse and how much bull$hit you put up with and you end it by stating how if you are unhappy with your job you leave it...sounds like, much like the nurses you aren't empathizing with, you feel the same way...just for different reasons...like I said before...we are all in this together...hopefully for the same reasons...ultimately, that is patient care...

I agree, these are sad nurses, and there is no excuse for their behavior. I don't know how you deal with it. Kudos to you.

Agency ICU work was one of my mainstays for the past 15 yrsand I enjoyed this work for many many years.

The whole agency experience has changed for me as well in the last few years. The hostility, dumping, and unrealistic expectations became overwhelming to me and I could not do it any longer, sadly. I found the above the norm in my area..it was becoming accepted behavior in too many facilities.

When I was on staff I was respectful of my agency/ traveler help when I was a charge/staff nurse...but that has changed more often than not out there. Now its all about 'OK we have agency tonite...she can take the worst patients AND admit'. (while we sit and critique the outsider)

Seriously, to be an agency nurse today takes more cajones than this old gal has..its just not worth it anymore. I do not know how today's agency nurses can put up with the crap out there today and I don't know how the staff nurses who use and abuse them can sleep at night.

Some things are just not worth the money.

They work full time and most bust their a$$ for their money day in and day out...they are used to working full time under less than optimal conditions, they are frustrated, they are overworked, they are underpaid, they also have to hear how their hospital has no money to pay them or to improve conditions or to have any retention or recruitment and in the same breath pay outside nurses to do the same job for more money. I think they have a right to be a little frustrated.

hmmm.....they also have a right to GO TO ANOTHER HOSPITAL!

hellooooo there IS a nursing shortage! I would hope nobody would put up with "less than optimal conditions...being overworked, underpaid etc" There are plenty of hospitals that have GREAT working conditions and staffing ratios.

The problem with these nurses is that they don't want to leave for whatever reason, so really it is their fault that they are so frustrated. Their hospital is probably using agency nurses b/c they are so short staffed b/c nobody wants to work there!

I say they need to get another job and stop the whining

I agree, if they are that unhappy, maybe it is time to move on...However is it really their fault they are frustrated? It really has nothing to do with the hospital administrations overloading hospitals sometimes with unsafe numbers of patients...insurance companies not reimbursing hospitals.....pt's being sicker than they used to be....I have worked in many different places...and although I absolutely love my job and where I work now...there are plenty of days where it can be frustrating...and the grass is not necessarily greener on the other side...You talk about people should just be able to leave and go work somewhere else and quit whining....to a point I agree, whining doesn't get anyone anywhere...however, when you are vested in a place for a long time, and you are making decent money, and you have worked your way up the ladder in seniority, and you have a pretty good build on your pension....when you weigh the pro's and con's and throw it into your family equation...walking away and starting over may just not be an option...

I think reading this thread just proves that the distaste goes both ways....I have been on both sides of the fence as both an agency and a staff nurse....sometimes, we are our own worst enemy....that is the sad part...

I agree that investing your time in a hospital would definately make you feel more hesitant to leave, but when it all boils down you have to be happy where you are. Maybe they are happy where they are, but just unhappy that agency nurses are getting paid more $$$. Maybe they don't know what its like to even be an agency nurse (as there are downsides to it!). I know when I worked for our in-house registry, I would schedule myself 3-4 x a week and some weeks would only get 1-2 of those shifts! So it really isn't a perfect system. Maybe thats where the issues are, some staff might not know the downsides of it and are just looking at the extra $/hr the agency nurse makes. Even if they do feel that way, the respect should still be there.

I agree...and it should go both ways....

Let Them Hate, You Know What Life Goes On. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Yes i do have to put up with bullshit and bad attitudes, however the bad attitudes of the nurses does not affect my desire to work at an institution. Yes, it is annoying at times. However, i am very good at ignoring negative behavior from my colleagues. I am there 13 hours of the day;I focus my attention on providing excellent patient care.

Bad attitudes and bullshit from management will affect my decision to stay at a hospital.

my dtr works agency on a prn basis . they know when her hours at regular job are and they will call her . sometimes they will call her one day for the next day and then call her up at 4a to cancel

she can accept or decline an assignment...she does a little bit of extra when she needs a little extra...it is a win win situation . they have coverage when they need it, someone on the list is sure to be available, and the nurses pick up extra money..most have regular jobs..

it is also good to back on your own floor where you know where everytthing is and you know your co-workers

enjoy your life at work...don't be grumpy and what you make is your business...shut up
