Why the high pay in Texas?

I am not yet even a nursing student but I think I will purse a CRNA degree.

I was scanning a nursing job site and it seems that Texas has a very high pay scale.

Any ideas as to why?

I'm headed to San Antonio in 2 months. Is it that bad?

I'm here less thatn a year and I love it awesome weather nice people slower pace (outside of work) than east coast youll love it wanna work couplet care

Whenever I am blue and feel trapped here in AZ I go on line and look at the beautiful homes in Houston and feel ready to go on. I LOVE them. So much less expensive than here however the cost of property taxes made me almost fall over. I think I'm a Texan in my heart.

I have lived here in San Antonio for a year and a half and LOVE it, well except all of the different freeways, gets confusing for a newbie. However I'm moving to go to a nursing school other than the one here, and I'm very sad to be leaving San Antonio.

After visiting 40 of the 50 states, I am proud to call Texas home...Texas born and raised I can honestly say I have no rednecks in my family...YeeHaw thank goodness! The "Bubba's" (I use the term affectionately :) ) keep us trauma lovers in business!

I live near Athens GA, and used to manage a band here. We went to Austin for the SxSW (South x Southwest) Festival. It was so much fun, and Austin seemed like such a neat city, plus everyone was really friendly. But my heart belongs to Athens - there's no place like home.:)

So if someone were to list the top FIVE or so reasons for NOT living in Texas what might they include? Other than it's "brown and dusty" I haven't seen to many negatives posted to support this position (also if you're going to blast Texas for being dry then you also have to put Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and much of California in the same boat).

Cannot speak for the whole of Texas , but Killeen was a horrible place to live, to many people crammed in too small an area, the cost of living was much higher than here at home (NW ARK) and the wages were only about .20 cents more per hour. The people also weren't AS friendly as here, but have also been less friendly places. Also as far as my situation I HATED being an army wife and wasn't very good at it either we are a much happier civilan couple lol.

Dry has nothing to do with it for me. Flat had a lot to do with it. Plus it's not dry, it's humid. No landscape what so ever. I lived in Dallas and saw a lot of the other cities too. Austin is pretty but not for me. Lets see, the short list is as follows. I didn't find the people to be very friendly. Having money seemed to be high priority for most of the people I met. It was actually one of the first questions I was asked about when I went on first dates. How much do you make? They were pretty rude in my opinion too,for the most part. I can't speak for the east coast having never lived there but it wasn't anything like the west coast as far as people being helpful. The night life was awesome, that I give them credit for. But that gets old. The water is brown, kinda scary to get in to. The "Don't Mess With Texas" attitude gets really old. It seems like a lot of people still want to seperate from the Union and I say let em. Anyway, that's just me. I have lived in 6 states and have been to 35 out of 50. So that's what I based my opinion on. From what I can tell, you either love it or hate it.

COUG RN you raise another good question. Where in the United States do you think people are the nicest? If I had the money of say Oprah, I would sponsor a study where researchers visited every state "undercover" and engaged in a variety of scenarios multiple (say a couple of hundred in each area tested) times. Then I would publish the results and repeat EVERY year. In this way we would not only identify where people were the nicest, but also create an incentive for EVERYWHERE to become nicer. Who knows, maybe even the Big Apple would rank number one, if not the first year then maybe someday! I can recall reading a Reader's Digest article years ago where they did this kind of thing with regard to "pace of life". I was absolutely shocked when Los Angeles ranked as having the SLOWEST average pace! I think they did a similar thing with honesty, but I cannot recall who scored good, and who didn't.

Why Texas is not for me (I have lived in Big Spring, and have visited Dallas, Laredo, San Antonio, El Paso, Amirillo, Houston, Brownsville, and a few other miserable cities. IMHO Austin is the only city of reason in teh state.)

1. Too flat

2. Too conservative

3. too dry, or too humid depends on the east versus west orientation

4. Very restricted land use. Texas is not big on open space. Most all of the state is private land.

5. Did I mention conservative? Texas is one of the belt loops of the bible belt.

Why New Mexico is better

1. Less pay, but more genuine people, and way more free thinking.

2. Its the high desert, with snow and sunshine. The summers in northern parts are better than Texas could hope to have. Very little too no humidity.

3. Very liberal, you can be what you want to be without the whole state calling you a freak. In Texas, Austin is the only city you can get away with this.

4. Half of the state is freely accessable public land.

5. All the texans vacationing there can't be wrong can they?

That pretty much says it all for me as well. I grew up in the south, and wanted to get away from all of that. Texas was too much of the same ...

Obviously it works for some people. But I never could "fit in" there, or the south for that matter. ;)
