Whose resposibility is it to ask a patient..

if they would object to an observer or student present in the room during a physical? A doctor dropped the drawers(and underwear) of an UNWILLING man when he didn't comply to the Dr.'s "request" in front of a female student. The guy who was being treated for impotence and cronic pain for years by this doctor was very embarrassed and said he would never have permitted an observer in the room if asked. He told me with tears in his eyes about being unable to make love to his wife and the trouble it was bringing, that he hides in the garage in the cold to cry.A terrible story, creating fights when his wife suggested they get intimate etc.

I care for this man,I've known him for years. He's funny and sweet and has even sent us flowers!I agree with everything he say's about exposing his "worthless member" against his will.He said (and the doctor admits this) that the doctor said "oh no,the embarrassment is yet to come" as he yanked his pants and underwear down...If front of his wife too! he and his wife are inseparable and she says ( I spoke to her about this ) he wants to be her hero and be everything to her but the impotence is destroying him,he crys in the bathroom, in the garage and she's powerless( I'm crying now).

They called me and asked if the doctor could call them but the doctor refused. Finally after six week and many more calls he had to make an appointment to talk to this doctor about this! He showed up with his wife again (another sweetheart) and the silly doctor blamed it on the staff! he lied and said he just found out and also that it's the staff's responsibility to inform him that the extra person in the room is there to stay for the whole procedure and if they don't want observers a staff member is responsible for putting a note on the door.He also said the the unwilling removal of clothing in front of student (and observers? Hmmm) is common and in twenty years no one has complained. He said quote "how else are they going to learn? LEARN WHAT?

how to humiliate your patients?

The patient, his wife and two children will never come here again and that makes me sad.A wonderful couple with wonderful kids.

Has anyone ever been told it's their resposibilty? no one here has ever been told that and I can't imagine what this doctor is thinking blaming us. What should I do?

Thank you so much!

I've worked in both a teaching hospital and a large medical group that has med students do their clinicals in the various outpatient clinic. The docs ir always introduced their student and asked the patient if it was ok for them to be present. If the patient said no, then the med student was sent out of the room.

As far as undressing, the docs I worked with, would explain why they needed to exam the patient. Again, if the patient refused to undress and the doc felt it was neccessary in order to do an assessment, then the doc would end the appointment. The doc would let the patient know that they were more than welcome to return, when the patient would allow a complete exam to be done.

As far as the doc, physically forcing the patient's clothes off, this would be considered battery and the doc could have been arrested.

I was a student at the time a similar situation happened...guess what...I asked right before exam! No one bothered to ask the patient if it was okay for me to be in the room, so I took it upon myself to do what was right...I introduced myself, and asked if they wished me to observe or leave. The patient polietly asked me to leave, and I smiled and said "I totally understand"..and left.

Needless to say that patient appreciated my respect towards their choices as a patient, and gave me quite a wonderful review to my instructor. I also got to spend quite a bit of time with him after that, and really got to know him, which was great for both of us!

I feel an introduction to a patient is standard and should be done, and if you need to add a little something to it...then is the time. A great 'in' if you need it! ;)

Can you clarify this?

I'm just saying that if a physician did that to a women in front of a male student especially against her will there would be hell to pay don't you think? The way he put it to me was, what part of my genitals were not exposed? In order to expose a woman's genitals completely she would have to be in a very embarrassing position.

This doctor is a royal a$$! Just reading about his behavior has me mad! And, just an FYI for all who don't know it....a patient has the right to refuse any aspect of their care or treatment at any time. Just because you happen to be in a teaching hospital does not give the hospital carte blanche to do as they wish! I would direct this pt to write a formal complaint to any and all, BOM, Dean of Medicine, Director of that practice, etc! Much better than spreading stories on the internet, much more effective.

In fact, I would write a formal letter of complaint to the physician himself. I would be expecting a huge apology from this jerk. And make it known that he has lost a patient (or few as it may be)!
