It's nice to know that those of us who are anti union have some friends out there to help us with this fight.

Well, I've been bit on both sides of the union fence so I reserve my support on the issue.

I am comforted to know that there are agencies and nurses willing to step in when unions go on strike and abandon patients. I look back to when Reagan fired the ATC people who went on strike and wish that were the standard now. Maybe if nurses on strike started losing jobs then this act of abandoning patients would cease.

If the union nurses really care about the patients and they feel management doesn't i.e. poor staffing levels, what do they do to ensure the patients are taken care of ? I don't leave my assignment without being sure another nurse has taken over my patients. It's my responsibility as well as management to be sure the patient is well taken care of. If management tells me a nurse has been called and will be here in 30 minutes then I wait that 30 minutes.

When I went to the picket line to support fellow nurses there were a "picket captains".

Nursing manahers from the top down had the cell numbers of these nurses with instructions to call if patient care was at risk. All RNs scheduled to work aalong with most RN staff were in uniform and availableto go care for patients if management asked them to.

It was a one day strike but the hospital locked the nurses out for two more days.

Nearly 15 years ago I went to suppor RNs on strike. For most of the morning night shift and other RNs assisted with transporting patients to a nearby hospital.

A couple drove to the front of the hospital. The woman was in labor. An RN the delivery, gave report to her manager, and returned to the picket line.

I think mother and baby were the only patients in that hospital.

That was a one day strike too.

Well, as the facility is given plenty of notice that a strike is about to occur, if the FACILITY CARES about pts, they have the option to transfer pts to another facility, cancel elective procedures.

One might also say that if nurses put up repeatedly with poor/dangerous staffing, in facilities where there are remedies/options, they are partially responsible for injury to pts related to poor staffing. Thus if we truly care about the good of the pts, we owe a duty to them to fix that issue.

(please note that I am neither a union advocate, nor union member but I do not strike break - I personally have never seen a nursing strike occur where it was not meritted by poor conditions/inadequate staffing. But my experience is limited)

If the facility truly cared for its patients, it would have fired every nurse that walked. This BS about notice given, cell #s for the managers to call, and it was only one daystrike is just that! Regardless of how the union camp wants to paint the picture, strikes are pure patient abandonment and should result in job termination. Is that how you would want your family treated?

There is NO place in healthcare for unions.
