Would you rather work (5) 8 hour shifts of (3) 12 hour shifts?
I'm seriously considering oncology which would be 7pm-7am with rotating weekends...

I like my four 10-hour noc shifts as I have 3-day weekends every week (Sat, Sun, Mon)but years ago I worked 3 12s(day shift) and prefer that schedule.

Personally, I prefer 5-eights. I think with 3-12's, I would work say 7-7 with a one hour drive, so basically I'd be away from home from 6-8 (if no over-time) three days a week. I just couldn't do that right now in my life.

50% of the suckage of work is waking up early, getting ready, driving there, and driving home.

12 hour shifts are one of the reasons I went to nursing school.

3 12's. Schedule it right (and if your body can handle it), you have the possibility of having 9 days off in a row without havin to use a single hour of your PTO. Of course, you'd be working yourself to do as much....but if you're young it is something to consider.
9 days off..... MAN I can't wait to be a nurse!!! I freak out when we have Friday or Monday holidays and my office is closed.

I work the 5 8-hr shifts and I would much rather work 3 12's, it seems like i'm never home, and all I do is work.

Three 12's is the way to go for me too. The days I am gone I am really gone, and stuff like laundry, housework etc don't get done. That is about the only down side. I see my kids/husband more when I do 3 12's because I am not coming home exhausted five days a week and falling into bed shortly after coming home. With 12's, they get 4 full days of my loving presence lol.

I work 2 eights and 2 tweleves to get 40 hours. I like 40 hours over 36 (more $$$$$$$$$$$$). I would prefer 5 eights though (my hospital likes 12's). The 8's are better for my childcare which is the most important thing to me.
