Which action would the nurse take to use a wide base of support when assisting a client to get up from a chair?

1. Bend at the waist and place arms under the client's arms and lift.

2. Face the client, bend knees, and place hands on client's forearms and life.

3. Opening gauze pads packages before putting on sterile gloves

4. Tighten the pelvic muscles before assisting the client.

Could you please explain why each answer is incorrect, and why the one chosen is correct?

Correct answer is 3.

lol that's kinda funny.

Okay, assuming that you are serious:

Well, I can't tell you exactly what three has to do with the question, but I CAN tell you why the others are wrong:

1. Never bend at waist

2. Don't lift a client by holding on to the forearms

4. Tighten your abs to lift, think core, not kegels :-)

And 3? Well, it is right, because if you put your gloves on first, then went to open the packages (assuming the packs were not in the sterile kits), you would contaminate the gloves. But I don't know why that option would even be in with the others.

That has to be a typo

I agree with the previous posts. Looks like someone made a mistake.

The question is from a Nursing Fundamentals Reviews and Rationals book, and the explaination does say that three is correct. I missed the question I put down 4. I thought is was best to have the pelvic tilted, and thus the pelvis muscle would be tightened. The others had some kind of error in them just procedure wise. The only one that did not have an error procedure wise was 3 which didn't even seem related to the question.

I still don't know why 4 would not be correct as the nurse is suppose to tilt pelvis prior during stand.

4. Tighten the pelvic muscles before assisting the client.

Notice that it says to "tighten the pelvic muscles". The only way you can tighten pelvic muscles are to do Kegels. To tilt the pelvis, you use abdominal muscles, not pelvic muscles. And while you may do them periodically during the day for your own fitness and continence issues, Kegels will not help you to lift anything...

Make sense?

That makes sense. Thank You.

Perfect example of some of the stupid, most frustrating questions you have to go through to get your license. I have seen the darnest of questions, lol!

none are nearly correct, try emailing/calling company that printed book.

Strangest question.
