Help! I am so confused! I am currently about halfway through an LPN program in Jacksonville, NC and doing pretty well. When I graduate I am getting a Florida LPN license and moving back home to Clearwater. My major dilemma is that no hospitals seem to be hiring LPNs in the Tampa Bay area, but all job postings I see require 1 year hospital experience. What do I do?
Thanks,
April

you can always work for a home health agency. The pay is good and the job is easy. LTC facilities and Assisted Living Facilities are always hiring as well. Good luck on passing boards and with ur move!

hey,
Try assisted living facilities and apply to the hospitals even though they say you need 1yr experience....
all the best

Good point, Cococure.
I used to work in HR/benefits and was directly involved in posting job openings .... I saw from the inside that many times, the job requirements are a wish list. Employers claim they want X years of experience and X degree, and often they settle for far less than that because their fantasy candidate never materializes....
If you really want a certain job, throw your hat into the ring and you might be surprised sometime that you get a callback...
Good luck!

In my experience, which is working with at risk youth prior to deciding on nursing, one year experience means any kind of experience- volunteer, clinicals, etc. I could be wrong in this case though

Congrats, on finishing up the lpn program. I will be starting in March 5, 2007. I have already a BA in Health Administration though. I was trying to get in the accelerated prgm for Rn but too many applicants. I figured that becoming a LPN would be the easier route. On top of my BA I also hace 2 yrs of Biology,i.e Anatomy & Physiology 1 and 2, Microbiology, General bio, Human development and Nutrition. Wityh all this I still was having a hard time getting in. I decided to go to do the lpn, my question is ; Are the LPN classes tense.

You really need to start out as med surg even if it's a place like Kindred or a County or VA facility to get some work experience going.
Whatever you do, please go back to school for your RN. I have been a Nurse 28 yrs. starting off as a LPN for the first few years and making the switch that has done nothing but put good money in pocket and has saved the day financially for my family.

My friend had the same problem, but she persisted. Finally she got a job at Northside in Saint Petersburg which was willing to orient a new grad LPN.
A coworker, who had been with us for years had to quit because we weren't hiring LPNs and got a job at the VA, in Saint Petersburg, where they hire new grad LPNs.
In this area LPNs run Long Term Care, and that's where the money is. Lots of opportunity to get your year's experience.
Good luck.
